Youngsville girls track team member Cassi Swartzbaugh easily clears a hurdle and races toward the finish line to win the girls 100-meter hurdles during Tuesday’s meet with Eisenhower at Youngsville High School.
Youngsville's girls delivered a 90-51 victory over the Lady Knights while the Ike boys earned an 88-53 decision.
For the Eisenhower boys, Anthony Amroski had the best individual day of the group with three first-place finishers. Amroski was a monster on the track, winning the 800, 1600 and 3200 in times of 2:31.18, 5:35.12 and 12:04.8 respectively.
The Knights' win was also fueled by a sweep in the relay events. The 1600 team of Richard Knisley, Andrew Onoratti, Nathan O'Brien and Matt Eernisse was victorious as were the 4X100 and 4X800 teams.
Colin Shine was a two-time winner for the Knights in the high jump and long jump, Knisley shared the 800 win with Amroski and Jake VanHouten was the winner in the 300 hurdles.
Despite doing so in a losing effort, Youngsville's Rocco Gatta was the meet's only four-time individual winner. Gatta won the 100 in 11.57, the 200 in 23.97, the 400 in 54.98 and the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, eight inches.
Also winning for the Eagles were Andy Lalwani in the 110 hurdles (17.44), Mike Hamrick in the triple jump (37' 8 1/2), Austin Mechling in the discus (99'1) and Mitch Wilcox in the javelin (151'1).
"I knew Eisenhower had a little bit more depth than we did," said Youngsville boys coach Jeff Manelick. "We did well in our strengths, the sprints and throws, but it just wasn't enough to offset the score. (Rocco) Gatta looked pretty good, he was a four-time winner. His 100 and 200 time on our (cinder) track was pretty good. He just missed qualifying for districts in the shot by an inch. Everybody in the shot improved distance-wise.
"Andy Lalwani in the 100 hurdles improved his time by almost a half second, and that was on our track, too," said Manelick. "Mike Hamrick was pretty solid, he took the triple, and placed in the 'one' and the 'two.' Mitch Wilcox continues to do well in the jav. (Austin) Mechling did a nice job, winning the discus, and placing in the shot."
The Youngsville girls got a stout effort from a couple of point scoring seniors as well as strong showings from the freshman class in earning their victory. Teammates Cassi Swartzbaugh and Abbey McLaughlin each finished with the maximum of four wins.
Swartzbaugh tied the school record in the 100 hurdles with a run of 16.73 and also won the 300 hurdles, triple jump and 1600 relay with Lexi Robinault, Kellie Lindstrom and McLaughlin. McLaughlin added victories in the 100, 200 and long jump.
Other individual winners for the Eagles were Katelyn Maille in the 3200 and Katelyn Hall in the javelin. Also victorious were the 3200 relay team of Robinault, Maille, Aubree Hendrickson and Lindstrom and the 400 relay team of Emily McChesney, Emily Cedrone, Mallory Eastman and Hendrickson.
"I said in the preseason that if the freshman class stepped up and provided some points for us, we could do some big things," said Youngsville coach John Victor. "They stepped up today. I really have to give some props to my ninth-graders. All the girls are working so hard and the future is really looking bright."
While things didn't work out in the team results, the Lady Knights still had some winning performances on Tuesday. Bizz Baran was a two-time winner with first-place runs in the 400 and 800, Marion Sherer won the high jump, Jessica Haskins won the shot put, Felicia O'Lay won the discus and Julia Bauer had the best run in the mile.
"(Bizz) Baran took first in the 400 and 800, ran very smart races today," said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. "We weren't going so much for times but for places. Felicia O'Lay had a good distance in the jav and Jess Haskins had a very god day."
"We did have 12 personal-bests today, so even on that track we did do very well as far times and distances," he said.
Youngsville (1-2 girls, 0-3) boys is off until Tuesday when it travels to Corry. Eisenhower (3-1-1 boys, 1-4 girls) is right back into action Thursday at Johnsonburg.
