TRACK: Dragons’ Day: Warren boys track team wins Harbor Creek Invitational title

April 16, 2012
By ALLEN SEYBERT (aseybert@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

HARBORCREEK - At the site of next month's District 10 Class AAA track & field championships, the Warren boys track team provided what it hopes is a sign of things to come.

The Dragons ran away from the pack Saturday, winning the team title at the Harbor Creek Invitational by a whopping 22 points. The Lady Dragons had a strong showing of their own, but had to settle for sixth in the meet that saw 26 different girls teams and 15 different boys teams score a point.

"This is just a tremendous confidence booster for our team," said Warren boys coach Steve Norris. "We knew we had a good shot to finish among the top third in the team standings - especially if we got some points in the field. We did that, but the guys on the track just had an incredible day. The kids were just beaming with the trophy. This win means so much to them."

Luke Wortman, right, finished second in the 300 low hurdles for Warren, which was the top boys team on Saturday at the Harbor Creek Invitational.

Just how good was the afternoon for the Warren boys? The numbers say a lot.

A total of 10 individuals placed in at least one event and all three relay teams also placed. Two of those relay teams - the 4X400 and 4X800 - were victorious and set new meet records for good measure.

The 4X400 team of Jordan Willetts, Caleb Hultman, Luke Wortman and Tanner Rosenberg won the event with a run of 3:33.16 and the 3200 relay team of Brad Simmons, Christian Harrington, Hultman and Rosenberg was first in 8:19.70. Rounding out Warren's relay day was the 400 team of Rob Bablak, Chris McNeal, Dakota Matson and Kyle Kulka in fifth.

Individually, no Dragon had a bigger day that senior Nathan Zigler. Zigler recorded a third-place finish in the 110 hurdles and was fifth in both the 300 hurdles and high jump, clearing five feet and ten inches.

Two-time placewinners for the Warren boys were Willetts and Luke Wortman. Willetts was fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 100 while Wortman was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles and third overall in the 400.

Also scoring important points for the winning team were Mark Davis (fourth in the high jump), Hultman (fourth in the 800), Rosenberg (sixth in the 800), Austin Jerman (sixth in the javelin), Harrington (seventh in the 3200), McNeal (eighth in the javelin) and Simmons (eighth in the 1600).

The Warren girls managed to place two relay teams and had six other individuals deliver placewinning performances during the meet. The 4X800 relay team of Ellis Beardsley, Anna Falvo, Paige Rimer and Megan Smoulder was highest placing relay team in second and the 4X100 team of Sabrina Anderson, Brooke Armanini, Kaitlyn Levesque and Casey Kulka was third.

Individually, only Ellis Beardsley placed in multiple events for the Dragons. Beardsley was third in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs. Brooke Armanini had the highest individual finish for Warren with a second in the girls long jump, leaping 15 feet and 10 inches.

Lindsay Onuffer was third in the 300 hurdles, Paige Rimer was fifth in the 800, Rachel Lasecki was seventh in the 100 hurdles and Amy Castagnino was eighth in the triple jump.

"Ellis really shined today and her times continue to be well below where they were at this time last year," said Warren girls coach Mark Sweet. "Overall, I was very pleased with our work on the track. Another nice performance was Lindsay Onuffer in the 300 hurdles. She's a freshman who just recently started doing the hurdles and she's already qualified for districts."

The Dragons will try to build on the momentum found in Saturday's invitational on Tuesday when they host Corry in dual meet competition.

Youngsville at

Brookville Invitational

BROOKVILLE - It may not have had an overwhelming amount of placewinners, but Youngsville more than held its own during the Brookville Invitational Saturday at Brookville Area High School.

The highlight of the day was provided by Eagles hurdles star Cassi Swartzbaugh in the 300 hurdles. Swartzbaugh finished the event with a time of 47.10 seconds - good enough for second overall and just eight-tenths off of the top spot.

Youngsville's 4X400 relay team of Kellie Lindstrom, McLaughlin, Lexi Robinault and Swartzbaugh finished sixth while the 4X800 relay team of Robinault, Aubree Hendrickson, Piper Olson and Katelyn Maille was seventh. Rounding out the Lady Eagles' placewinners was McLaughlin who recorded an eighth-place in the 200.

"It was a good day," said Youngsville coach John Victor. "We're not where we need to be as of yet, but we're getting closer. The girls keep going at these meets and working hard and that's all you can really ask for."

Mike Hamrick was the standout for the Youngsville boys track team on Saturday.

Hamrick placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet and seven inches as well as eighth in the 100-meter dash.

Freshman Mitch Wilcox had a strong day with a seventh in the javelin, throwing 150 feet and seven inches. Teammate Andy Lalwani made the finals in the 110 hurdles before settling into 11th place overall.

"Mike had a really nice day for us," said Youngsville boys coach Jeff Manelick. "I was pleased. We had a lot of guys finish with personal bests and that gives us something to build on as the season continues."

The Eagles are back in action Tuesday, hosting county rival Eisenhower.
