Iroquois doubles up Eagles in Region 4 softball

April 14, 2012

Youngsville cut its number of errors in half between Thursday's game at Northwestern and Friday's home game with Iroquois.

Despite that fact, the Eagles still committed five errors in a 12-6 Region 4 loss to the Braves at Youngsville High School.

"We're hitting the ball very hard right now," said Youngsville coach Mark Nyquist. "We're just making too many mental mistakes in the field. We make one error and the girls get rattled and it just kind of snow balls from there."

Sticking with it
Youngsville first baseman Elise Dunn scrambles to gain control of the ball after knocking down a hard ground ball hit by an Iroquois batter during Friday’s softball game at Youngsville High School. Dunn recovered in time to record the out.

The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an Amber Fox RBI triple. Fox finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and now has a county-best 13 RBI on the season. Colleen Rex and Katie Gustafson also tripled for the Eagles and Jessica Jameson doubled.

Youngsville wasn't the only team hitting the ball hard on Friday as the visitors smacked two doubles, a triple and three home runs of their own. All three home runs came in a five-run sixth inning that turned a 3-2 Iroquois edge into an 8-2 advantage.

Rex, Fox, Jameson, Judi Lewis and Julia Sveda all belted out two hits and Elise Dunn and Gustafson had one apiece.

The Eagles (3-3) will try to end a two-game slide Saturday when they host Villa Maria. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
