TRACK: Sheffield boys stay unbeaten

COUDERSPORT - Sheffield boys track coach Bryan Gould was looking at Wednesday's District 9 Northern Tier League matchup at Coudersport.

The Falcons finished second in the league last year to Sheffield's third, and edged the Wolverines, 78-62, last season.

On Wednesday, Sheffield's boys team won, 80-70, to improve to 2-0-1 on the season.

"This was one of my meets to judge us by," said Gould. "I knew today was going to be big."

Wolverines finished among the top three in 17 of the 18 events, including sweeping the 100-meter dash, 200, and long jump in poor conditions. The only event Sheffield didn't place an athlete in the top three was the pole vault, in which it doesn't compete.

Evan Jamison's final long jump of the day gave him a second-place finish and the team sweep in that event, and that effort typified the day, Gould said.

"It was a full team effort today," said Gould. "We had placewinners in all the events, which we didn't do last year, especially in the distance events. And in the throwing events, George (Fitch) really stepped it up.

"Evan Jamison really came through for us, too, by winning the high jump, and we got a surprise in the long jump by sweeping it," said Gould.

Kalil Slaughter, literally running through sleet and into the wind, won the 100, 200, and was part of the winning 4X100 relay team with Deonte Clay, Kwante Johnson, and Dylan Reynolds. Slaughter also took the long jump. Other winners included Steve Dendy in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Keon VonHendricks in the 400, and Fitch in the javelin.

Jamison teamed with VonHendricks, Reynolds and Mark Nadal to win the 4X400 relay - the last event on the track.

Gould had close eyes on the event as he figured the meet might come down to that event, and Sheffield won by about five seconds.

Hannah Vile won the 200-meter dash, and Tierra Hanson won the shot, for the Lady Wolverines (0-3), which suffered a 97-41 setback.

Despite having only 13 members, the Sheffield girls track team was only swept in three events, and actually swept the 200-meter dash with underclassmen Vile, Marlea Sprandle and Jade Moore finishing 1-2-3.

"I'm very impressed," said Sheffield girls coach Jenelle Johnson. "It's a young team."

She said the Lady Wolverines swept the javelin in an event last week, so a sweep on the track shows how far they've come.

Freshman Jen Isenberg finished second in each of the javelin, discus and high jump. Another freshman, Brandy Rockwell, was second in the 300 and 800. Vile added a second in the 100.
