Youth wrestling

Six Warren wrestlers participated in the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) National Open Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Mercyhurst North East. All six qualified for the national tournament held July 6 and 7 in Harrisburg. Placewinners on Saturday included: Owen Balas, fourth in the Elementary Division, 85-pound bracket; Nick DeSimone, third, Middle School, 11-12; Garrett Smead, second, High School, 152; Jonah Hordusky, third, High School, 140; Jason Peterson, fourth, High School, 125, and; Alex Streich, fourth, High School, 189.

Warren Area High School graduate Cody Bupp took third on Saturday in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59 seconds for Division III Penn State Behrend's men's track team against three other schools in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh.

Youngsville High School graduate Ben Oviatt improved to 7-1 on the year on Saturday in a complete-game 4-1 win for Division III Waynesburg College. Oviatt lowered his season Earned Run Average to 2.72. scattering seven hits and two walks for 15-9 Waynesburg.

Gymnastics

Jesse Valone, of Russell, and Cheyenne Mora, of Columbus, competed on Saturday for Stroup's Gymnastics at the Lucky Stars Invitational at Jamestown Community College, Jamestown, N.Y. Valone had the high overall score for the team, and earned a third-place trophy in the Prep Opt Advanced Division with 35.40 all-around points. She was first in bars. The team placed first in the Prep Opt Small Team Class. Mora was eighth in Prep Opt Advanced.

Big 30 football

Eisenhower High School senior teammates Jordan Hefferman and Logan Head will play in the 2012 Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic Football Game on Aug. 4 in Bradford. Hefferman is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound fullback/guard on offense and end and noseguard on defense, and was named a team M.V.P, and Lineman of the Year.

Head is a 5-10, 175-pound wingback and linebacker, and was a team captain and defensive M.V.P.
