LAKEWOOD, N.Y. - Expecting rain on Friday afternoon, the Warren Dragons tennis team hosted Mercyhurst Prep at the Lakewood Family YMCA.
While the location of the match was different, the end result was the same as Warren improved to 4-0 on the season with a 5-0 victory over the Lakers.
"This was our first league play match and it was important to get off to a good start," said Warren assistant coach Norm Dziendziel.
At first singles, Shane Burns defeated Ryan Campbell 6-0, 6-1. The victories continued at second singles as Thomas Pellegrino defeated Mitch McBride by an identical 6-0, 6-1 count.
The singles sweep finished at third singles where Matt Sandberg handed Nick Scrimenti a 6-1, 6-1 loss.
"The boys were efficient today as they hit the ground running and took charge from the start," said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch.
In top doubles, the Dragons duo of Grayson Foley and freshman Nathan Sandberg defeated their Laker opposition, 6-1, 6-3. Mercyhurst Prep showed up with just six players so the second doubles event was a 6-0, 6-0 forfeit to Warren.
Bartsch allowed Mercyhurst to play an exhibition match with the Dragons pair of Nick Tarpenning and Liam Boger and the Warren duo emerged with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The Dragons (4-0) visit Titusville on Tuesday in a 2:30 p.m. start before returning home Wednesday for a 4 p.m. showdown with Corry.
