Christian nation

March 27, 2012
The Times Observer

Dear editor:

Twenty-Twelve is shaping up to possibly be the most important and pivotal election in the history of this nation. The results could very well determine the status of the USA and the part it will play in the future of this world. As a Christian I believe that the divine hand of God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was guiding our forefathers in the foundation of this nation. Because of my beliefs, love of this nation, concern for its future and some comments made by our current leadership I was driven to do some research.

Several years ago President Obama made a statement that "we are no longer a Christian nation." By making this statement, it in its self is an admission that he once believed we were a Christian nation. I would like to share some facts with you, "especially " with those who are professing to be Christians.

On April 30, 1789 George Washington was sworn in as the first president of the USA at the Federal Building in New York City, the nations capital at the time. After Washington delivered his inaugural address he lead the senators and Representatives of the House on a foot procession through the street to a place of prayer to dedicate this nation to God. That place was "Saint Paul's Chapel" which is still standing, its at the corner "Ground Zero." This gathering is recorded in the Annals of Congress as part of the first ever-joint session of Congress with an acting president.

Fast forward to 9/11/2001 and at that time approximately 87 percent of this nation professed to be Christian. Ten years later (depending on who's stats it varies a little) from 74 to 77 percent profess to be Christian. Of that 74 to 77 percent 25 to 40 percent profess to attend church regularly when in reality it's more like 12 to 25 percent, depending on your location. Now of this 12 to 25 percent the statistics say only 3 percent actually tithe.

One cannot help but wonder, is president Obama correct, have we ceased being a Christian Nation? Have we deteriorated to the point of being "smorgasbord" Christians by taking from God's word (the Bible) only the parts we want and rejecting the rest? Ever wonder if 9/11/2001 was a warning from God? Remember, it occurred at the same location this nation was dedicated to God, interesting isn't it. As a nation can we survive on our present un-Godly course? Is there still time to repent as the people of Nineveh did or are we doomed to an end like Sodom and Gomorrah?
