Big 30 football

Sheffield Area High School senior Nick Bonavita was recently added to the Pennsylvania side of the Big 30 Don Raabe Charities Classic football game scheduled for Saturday, August 4, at Bradford's Parkway Field. Bonavita will be playing football for Juniata in the fall and was named to the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) all-star team after the 2011 season.

Youngsville Area 8 qualifiers
These members of the Youngsville youth wrestling program competed and placed at the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Section 3 Championships this past weekend at Youngsville High School. The grapplers have advanced to the PJW Area 8 Championships scheduled for this Friday and Saturday in Corry. Advancing were, front row, from left, Dustin Phelps (3rd place, 11-12, 70 pounds), Sam Hoover (2nd, 9-10, 90), Brandon Victor (2nd, 11-12, 70), Aaden Nichols (2nd, 6 & under, 45), Nathan Lehman (3rd, 11-12, 75), Jimmy Phelps (3rd, 13-14, 87) and Jacob DeSimone (3rd, 9-10, 95), and; back row, Hayden Victor (2nd, 13-14, 87), Aaron Morris (2nd, 11-12, 95), Austin Spead (1st, 13-14, 212), Mason Benjamin (3rd, 13-14, 212) and Tanner Burns (2nd, 13-14, 92).

Sheffield High School guards Ike Nearing and Mark Sprandle were named to the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) boys basketball all-star team for the recently completed season. Both seniors, Nearing led the club with 12.2 points per game scored this season and Sprandle was close behind with 11.2 ppg scored. Sprandle and Nearing helped lead the Wolverines to their first District 9 playoff win since returning to the district in 2005. Sheffield came within one victory of qualifying for the D-9 Class A playoffs.

College news

Warren Area High School graduate Kelsey Nuhfer competed as part of Division II California University of Pennsylvania's women's swim's team's 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday at the 2012 Division II Men's & Women's Swimming Championships in Mansfield, Texas. Her relay team finished 15th out of 20 teams in the preliminaries at 1:47.43, and 13th out of 16 in a season-best 1:45.90 in the finals, earning NCAA All-America Honorable Mention.
