Our opinion: 4-H a bright spot

March 12, 2012
The Times Observer

Head, Heart, Hands, Health. You seldom see those words anymore, but they are still valid for 4-H, an organization that stresses learning by doing, attention to the basics in life, and values.

And, this week 4-H clubs around Warren County and around the world are taking stock of their mission and rededicating themselves to its pursuit.

At a time when it sometimes seems that the world is in crisis, when it seems young people are under ever increasing pressure to tune out the basics of life and throw themselves headlong into the world of reality television, there are organizations like 4-H that give us hope.

For many people 4-H simply signifies a youth farm organization. "Oh, yeah, those are the kids at the fair with their animals every year." Well, yes, the county fair is a big deal to 4-H in this county, but the organization is concerned with far more than showing dairy cows and odd-looking chickens.

Head -Youth are encouraged to think for themselves, to use their intellect, to learn skills that will help them through life.

Heart - Compassion and service to others is an important part of this organization.

Hands -Learning by doing; is there a better way?

Health -Knowing the difference between healthy and unhealthy lifestyles will help these youngsters live long, fruitful lives.

4-H is one of those bright spots in an otherwise murky cultural landscape, and we salute the organization and the volunteers that make it run.
