WRESTLING: Fehlman wins in region quarters

Ike’s Johnson, Youngsville’s Durlin win region AA matches

March 3, 2012
The Times Observer

ALTOONA - Warren Area High School freshman D.J. Fehlman has positioned himself for a shot at the state tournament after a PIAA Northwest Region Class AAA quarterfinal win on Friday at Altoona Area High School.

Fehlman, the District 10 120-pound champion at 31-4, received a bye into the quarterfinal round to start out on Friday. Fehlman then extended his Warren freshmen record for wins in a season to 32 with a 2-0 decision over Cole Hanley (19-5), a junior from Central Mountain High School, and third seed out of District 6.

No match is an easy win at this point, but Fehlman gets a toughy in his semifinal match on Saturday morning. Fehlman matches up with Brashear's District 8 champion, senior Godwin Nyama, who is the top-ranked 120-pounder in the region and ranked second in the state. Nyama (33-2) earned a 22-7 technical fall over Fehlman earlier this season at Meadville High School's annual Tool City Tournament. Nyama was a 6-2 winner over another freshman in the quarters - Altoona's D.J. Hollingshead (33-4), who was the third-ranked wrestler in the region, illustrating how tough Fehlman's side of the bracket is in the 12-wrestler Northwest Region Tournament.

"(D.J.) wrestled a solid match," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger, "in control the whole time."

The top three wrestlers advance to states. Wrestling resumes at noon on Saturday with the semifinals and finals are set for 6:30 p.m. at Altoona Area High School.

Both 113-pounders from Warren County - Youngsville freshman Aaron Hoover and Sheffield sophomore Ricky Prosen - went 0-2 to end their seasons.

Eisenhower 182-pounder Trevor Spicer lost by major decision in the first round and the consolation rounds will continue on Saturday morning.

Ike 195-pound junior Jake Johnson, a fourth-place finisher at districts, pinned Redbank Valley District 9 fourth-place finisher Mark Strothers in the second period of his opener. He was decisioned, 7-2, in the quarterfinal match by District 9 champ Logan Stout (39-4) of Brookville.

"We have a lot of of wrestling to do (on Saturday)," said Eisenhower coach Kris Black.

Youngsville's Jaykup Durlin is also 1-1 after day one. The sophomore started with a 1-0 decision over Ridgway's Chad Quail at 220 pounds before losing in the quarters. He was pinned in the third period by Cochranton District 10 champion Cam Cyphert (35-1).
