How D-10 realignment affects county teams

February 18, 2012
By ALLEN SEYBERT (aseybert@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

Each and every District 10 high school team starts a new season with aspirations of making the District 10 playoffs. Now, with the release of region assignments for the 2012-2014 cycle, those teams will know who they need to overcome in order to qualify.

Here are the new region assignments as well as any significant changes for all county District 10 high school sports programs:

Girls Tennis

Warren's girls tennis team will see it's region largely unchanged for the region cycle of 2012-2014. Strong Vincent and General McLane, two teams that had been in Warren's region, will not be included in the new cycle as both schools have dropped their tennis programs.

Region 2: Central Tech, Fairview, McDowell, Mercyhurst Prep, Villa Maria, Warren

Football

Youngsville and Eisenhower will remain in Region 2 for the upcoming football season. Only the Saegertown Panthers have left Region 2 as they are now classified as a Class AA program.

Warren's football team is now in Region 5 and the changes in opposition will be many. Of the teams in their region last season, only Bradford remains. New region competition for the Dragons will be Slippery Rock, Oil City, Franklin, DuBois, Bradford and Meadville.

Region 2: Cambridge Springs, Cochranton, Eisenhower, Iroquois, Mercyhurst Prep, Union City, Youngsville, Maplewood

Region 5: Slippery Rock, Oil City, Franklin, DuBois, Meadville, Bradford, Warren

Boys Golf

For the first time in recent memory, the Eisenhower Knights and Warren Dragons will compete in different boys gold regions. Warren will compete in Region 3 alongside Grove City, Slippery Rock, Meadville and Oil City while Ike matches up with Rocky Grove, Franklin, Titusville and Corry. Both schools are classified as Class AA.

Region 3: Grove City, Slippery Rock, Meadville, Warren, Oil City

Region 5: Rocky Grove, Eisenhower, Franklin, Titusville, Corry

Girls Golf

The Warren girls golf team bumps up to Class AAA from Class AA a season ago. The Class AAA classification puts Warren into the newly formed Region 3 for girls golf with Strong Vincent, Meadville and McDowell.

Region 3: Warren, Strong Vincent, Meadville, McDowell

Cross Country

No changes here. Both the boys and girls cross country programs for Eisenhower, Youngsville and Warren will remain in Region 4 and face all of the same competition from the 2010-2012 region cycle.

Region 4 (boys): Corry, North East, Seneca, Union City, Eisenhower, Youngsville, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek, Warren

Region 4 (girls): Corry, Eisenhower, North East, Seneca, Union City, Youngsville, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek, Warren

Girls Volleyball

Not much will change for the Knights, Eagles and Dragons girls volleyball teams for 2012-2014. The three teams will remain in the same region and face much of the same competition from 2010-2012 with one exception. Meadville, formerly in Region 3, will join the region for the new cycle.

Region 4: Eisenhower, Oil City, Rocky Grove, Titusville, Warren, Youngsville, Franklin, Meadville

Boys Soccer

The Eisenhower boys soccer team will compete in Region 3 with the same teams from a season ago with the exception of North East who joins for 2012-2014. Warren is in Region 4 for the new cycle. The Dragons no longer have Franklin in their region and will instead face Saegertown in region play for 2012-2014.

Region 3: Eisenhower, Fairview, Mercyhurst Prep, Iroquois, Seneca, North East

Region 4: Oil City, Titusville, Bradford, Saegertown, Warren, Corry

Girls Soccer

In girls soccer, Eisenhower will see an addition of four teams in region play for 2012-2014. Last season, the Knights competed against Maplewood and Iroquois and those teams remain for the new cycle with the addition of Fairview, North East, Seneca and Conneaut Valley.

The Warren girls' region remains largely unchanged with the lone addition being that of Erie East.

Region 3: Fairview, North East, Seneca, Eisenhower, Iroquois, Maplewood, Conneaut Valley

Region 4: Mercyhurst Prep, Villa Maria, Warren, Corry, Bradford, East

Boys Basketball

Youngsville will drop down to Class A from Class AA for the new region cycle. Further changes in District 10 could come to pass in the Conneaut School District votes to consolidate. If that happens, a new region would be formed between Region 3 and 4. In that scenario, Cochranton, Eisenhower, Cambridge Springs, Maplewood, Saegertown and Youngsville would be grouped into a region together.

As it stands right now - prior to possible consolidation - Eisenhower and Youngsville will compete in Region 3 alongside Cochranton, Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley and Linesville.

The Warren boys' region has only one change with Central Tech departing and Strong Vincent being added.

Region 3: Cochranton, Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley, Linesville, Eisenhower, Youngsville

Region 7: Corry, East, Fort LeBoeuf, General McLane, Girard, Harbor Creek, Warren, Strong Vincent

Girls Basketball

The possible consolidation of the Conneaut School District also affects both the Eisenhower and Youngsville girls basketball programs. With those teams currently still in place, the only changes to the Knights' and Eagles' Region 3 will be the addition of two teams - Maplewood and Cambridge Springs.

Changes are aplenty for the Warren girls basketball team as far as region play goes. The Dragons will no longer compete against Fairview, General McLane and North East. However, the one addition to Warren's region will be Villa Maria - the three-time defending PIAA Class AA state champions. After a successful run in Class AA, the Victors return to Class AAA for next season.

Region 3: Cochranton, Conneaut Valley, Conneaut Lake, Linesville, Saegertown, Eisenhower, Youngsville, Maplewood, Cambridge Springs

Region 7: Corry, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek, Mercyhurst Prep, Warren, Villa Maria

Wrestling

The Eisenhower and Youngsville wrestling teams remain in Region 3 for the upcoming region cycle. All region competition remains the same with the exception of Corry who joins Region 3 after dropping from Class AAA to Class AA.

Warren's Region 4 loses Corry to Region 3 as well as Franklin which dropped down to Class AA. Joining Warren's region from Class AA will be Oil City.

Region 3: Eisenhower, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek, Iroquois, North East, Saegertown, Seneca, Union City, Youngsville, Corry

Region 4: Cathedral Prep, Central Tech, Oil City, General McLane, McDowell, Measdville, Strong Vincent, Titusville, Warren, East

Swimming

One of the few sports where the region cycles from 2010-2012 remain exactly the same in 2012-2014.

Region 3 (boys): Central Tech, Erie East, McDowell, Meadville, Strong Vincent, Mercyhurst Prep, Cathedral Prep

Region 3 (girls): Central Tech, Erie East, McDowell, Meadville, Strong Vincent, Mercyhurst Prep, Villa Maria

Baseball

The PIAA is expected to approve classification changes for the spring sports two-year cycle later this year. These are the proposed District 10 regions for 2012-2014.

Youngsville and Eisenhower's baseball region would lose Mercyhurst Prep while taking on Titusville and Franklin. Warren's baseball region only has one change as Corry had departed from its region.

Region 5: Iroquois, Eisenhower, Youngsville, Titusville, Franklin

Region 8: Fort LeBoeuf, General McLane, Harbor Creek, Girard, Warren

Softball

Eisenhower and Youngsville's new softball region is nearly completely different. Fairview, Girard, Northwestern, Villa Maria, North East, General McLane and Seneca are all out while Titusville, Franklin and Rocky Grove are in.

Warren's new softball region includes all of the teams from the 2010-2012 region cycle with the exception of Corry and Harbor Creek.

Region 5: Rocky Grove, Eisenhower, Youngsville, Iroquois, Titusville, Franklin

Region 7: Central Tech, Erie East, Warren, Fort LeBoeuf, Mercyhurst Prep, McDowell, Strong Vincent

Boys Tennis

Warren's boys tennis team will no longer compete against Fairview, General McLane, Girard, Mercyhurst Prep or Harbor Creek in region competition. They will know face both Titusville and Rocky Grove in region action.

Region 2: Titusville, Corry, Rocky Grove, Warren

Track & Field

Eisenhower, Youngsville and Warren remain in the same region with all of the same region competition. The same can be said for the three D-10 county girls track programs.

Region 3 (boys): Corry, Eisenhower, Franklin, Meadville, Oil City, Titusville, Warren, Youngsville

Region 3 (girls): Corry, Eisenhower, Franklin, Meadville, Oil City, Titusville, Warren, Youngsville
