All Warren County eyes are on freshman D.J. Fehlman at the District 10 Class AAA Wrestling Championships this weekend at Central Tech High School.
But nobody got to see him wrestle on Friday.
The freshman, who came in one win shy of Warren's record for wins by a freshman, had a bye in the seven-wrestler bracket at 120 pounds. Fehlman starts in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday at Central Tech against Paul Mancuso of Central Tech. Mancuso earned a 12-7 decision over General McLane's Deane Twitchell int he quarterfinal round on Friday. Fehlman (29-4) was the top seed at 120 pounds, and holds a major decision victory over Mancuso earlier this season.
A victory would put Fehlman in the championship match against either Alex Root of Prep or Paul Deitz of McDowell. More importantly, a berth into the final would mean Fehlman automatically qualifies for the Northwest Region Tournament in two weeks in Altoona. The top three at each weight class advance.
Another freshman, Jason Peterson, is in the semifinals at 113 pounds after a 14-10 decision over Meadville's JaQuai Boyd. Senior Drew Williams is in the semifinals at 138 pounds after a first-period pin in the quarters over Titusville's Easton Hogue.
"Drew has a touch match with (McDowell's Steve) Spearman on Saturday morning," said Warren coach Glen Baldensperger. "It was also nice to see Jason wrestle well and put himself into the semifinal round."
Alex Streich (195) and Garrett Smead (145) won matches in the consolation round following the winner's bracket quarterfinal matches. Collin DeLattre (126) and Cody Gunn (160) received consolation round byes to advance to Saturday matches. Chris McNeal (182) lost by injury default in the quarterfinals on Friday.
"Alex had a nice win against the kid from East," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. "That kid had beat him in the dual match earlier this year. Garrett also earned a nice win over a kid who he lost to earlier this season."
At the District 10 Section 1-AA Tournament in Union City, four Knights are in the semifinals after Friday's wrestling, including: Jeb Fedorchuk at 120, Dylan Baker at 126, Trevor Spicer at 182 and Jake Johnson at 195.
"All the guys that are in the semis looked pretty solid tonight," said Eisenhower coach Kris Black. "I don't want to say it went as expected, but it did. (Saturday is) the big day."
Youngsville was able to push four wrestlers into the semifinals. Hunter Proctor (132 pounds), Jeremy Lyon (170), Jaykup Durlin (220) and Stephen Beattie (285) will all be looking to punch tickets to the finals when wrestling resumes at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
"It was kind of a rough night for us, but there were some bright spots," said Youngsville coach Scott Ishman. "Both Jaykup and Stephen were impressive with their pins as were Jeremy and Hunter. Jaykup and Stephen wrestled close matches with their opponents at the duals, but were able to get pins tonight."
The remainder of the Eagles remain alive in the wrestlebacks, including Josh Lewis who lost a 2-1 triple overtime decision to Harbor Creek's Chris Merritt at 160 pounds.
The finals and consolation finals - with all wrestlers automatically advancing from these matches - begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at Union City High School.
The top four from each weight class advance to the District 10 Class AA Championships next weekend in Sharon.
