Sports Briefly... 2/15/12

February 15, 2012
The Times Observer

1,000-point Dragons

Preston McMeans became the sixth boys basketball player from Warren Area High School to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, according to Times Observer records. Jeff Eaton was the last 1,000-point male scorer for Warren in 2008. Before that, Ben Maljovec eclipsed the mark in 2004, Seth Meyers in 1991, and John Bowen in 1983. A teammate of Bowen, Jason Kolesar also scored over a thousand points in his high school career in the same time frame.

Bowen is the county's all-time-leading career scorer with 2,884 points, and both Bowen and Meyers are in the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame.

The last WAHS female to go over 1,000 career points was Katie White in 2009. Warren County Sports Hall of Famer Julie McChesney Stiles is Warren's all-time-leading female scorer with 1,436 points.

Kolesar was inadvertently omitted from Tuesday's Times Observer.

Through Monday's game, career point totals from Dragon boys include: John Bowen, 2,884; Seth Meyers, 1,298; Jeff Eaton, 1,221; Jason Kolesar, 1,098; Ben Maljovec, 1,054, and; Preston McMeans, 1,013.

Warren's freshmen team is 11-6 overall, and it concludes its season at 4 p.m. Friday, hosting Mercyhurst Prep at Warren Area High School.
