Winning the battle
Sheffield’s Hanna Fitch, middle, fights for a loose ball against DuBois Central Catholic on Monday. Sheffield lost to the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) South leaders, 58-24, at Sheffield High School.
Sheffield got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind by seven in the early minutes when Sheffield coach Jeff Labesky was forced to call a time out. The Wolverines' 3-2 zone was not doing the job, and DuBois was getting open looks inside and outside whenever it wanted.
After they scored, the Cardinals then transitioned into a full-court press, giving Sheffield all sorts of problems.
After falling behind 13-2, the Wolverines finally got on the board again with two foul shots from Hannah Vile. With some late scores, the home team tightened the gap to 15-9 at the end of the first period.
That momentum did not carry over to the second quarter.
Sheffield's shots were not falling on offense. The Wolverines were completely stymied by DuBois' aggressive defense. The gap grew to 21-9 before coach Labesky called another time out. After the time out, the Sheffield girls stepped up and scored eight points to make it a manageable 27-17 half-time deficit.
Then the third quarter blew the game wide open.
The Cardinals scorched the Wolverine defense for 19 points in the quarter. Not only did they score efficiently, they locked down on defense, only giving up five points in the quarter.
The Wolverines only mustered two points in the final quarter and fall to 3-17 overall. DCC is 8-12 overall.

SAEGERTOWN - Saying Youngsville's offense started slowly during Monday's Region 3 girls basketball game with Saegertown would be an understatement.
The third-place Panthers (12-7 overall, 7-3 in the region) held the Eagles scoreless into the second quarter and cruised to a 39-23 victory at Saegertown High School.
While the Eagles were failing to score in the first eight minutes, points were flying in for the home team. Saegertown scored the first 16 points of the game overall and took a commanding 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Eagles dug in their claws in the second half, but were still outscored by a bucket, falling by 16 points.
Katie Chuzie - fresh off a 27-point performance in a win over Iroquois last week - and Amber Fox led the Youngsville effort with eight points each. Lindsey Lyon added five points and Jessica Jameson also scored.
The Panthers also won the junior varsity game, 28-21. Cierra Ohl's six points was tops for the Eagles.
