Despite injuries and illness stretching its roster thin, the Sheffield wrestling team delivered an inspired performance during a 45-27 loss to Cameron County Wednesday at Sheffield Area High School.
"I wish we could've wrestled this match a week from now because we're going to be stronger next week," said Sheffield coach Jack Rice. "Injuries and sickness are keeping us from filling the roster right now, but we should be getting stronger as we go forward."
The holes in the Wolverines roster didn't necessarily cost the hosts on Wednesday as they forfeited just two weight classes. The visiting Red Raiders were forced to do the same, giving each team 12 free points.

A leg up

After Cameron County won the opening bout at 220 pounds, heavyweight Myers Chea delivered a first-period pin of Cameron County's Josh Reynolds. Rice said he was pleased with the aggressiveness shown by Chea who logged the pin just 50 seconds into the match to tie the match at 6-6.
After a double forfeit at 106 pounds, Cameron's Brandon Saline and Sheffield's Ricky Prosen wrestled a tight match at 113 pounds. Prosen wrestled hard, but was unable to get the reversal he needed late in the match, settling for a 4-2 decision loss.
Down 9-6, the Wolverines seemingly took control of the match with three straight victories at 120, 126 and 132 pounds. Brandon Johnston started the run with a 9-5 decision win over Cameron's Paul Etch at 120 pounds and 126-pounder Adam Barr followed that up with a pin of the Red Raiders' Zack Cokely at the 3:18 mark of the bout.
Rounding out the run of wins was Tyler Brisson's forfeit win at 132 pounds, giving the Wolverines a 12-point lead.
Unfortunately for Sheffield, that's the point of the night where the Red Raiders took control. Cameron County won six of the last seven matches, including four pins and two forfeits. The Wolverines' only other victory of the night came at 152 pounds where Steven Gregerson won via forfeit.
The Wolverines are back in action Saturday when they compete at the Saint Marys Tournament.

Cathedral Prep 57, Warren 21
ERIE - Warren suffered nine pins at the hands of Cathedral Prep in a 57-21 Region 4 loss on Wednesday.
After three straight Prep pins in a combined three minutes of mat time, D.J. Fehlman continued his great freshman season with a second period pin over Josh Caban. Fehlman led 11-1 when he pinned Caban 48 seconds into the second period.
Drew Williams earned a 5-2 decision three matches later for Warren (5-8 overall and 2-6 in region). Prep grabbed four pins, three by arm bar, and a decision before the next Dragons win. Prep is 9-5 and 6-2 and in third place in the region, behind General McLane and McDowell.
Tony Molinaro, wrestling up from his normal 138-pound class to 152, up leading 3-2 before being reversed and pinned at 3:12. Steve Kibbey also wrestled up for the Dragons at 160.
Chris McNeal lost by a 1-0 decision at 182.
Mike Crone "battled the whole way through," according to Warren assistant coach Scott Grinnen, on his way to a late second-period pin over James Trucilla. Crone was up 7-3 before pinning Trucilla, who pinned Crone at the Tool City Tournament in Meadville earlier this season.
Warren competes at the Grove City Tournament this weekend.

Fort LeBoeuf 60, Youngsville 17
WATERFORD - It was a rough night on the mat for the Youngsville wrestling team as the homestanding Fort LeBoeuf Bisons handed the Eagles a 60-17 setback.
Fort LeBoeuf - who improved to 8-0 in region competition, locking up the Region 3 title - won all but three of the weight classes in Wednesday evening's match at Fort LeBoeuf High School.
The result wasn't overly surprising as the Bisons have been at or near the top of the region for the last several years. In all, five Bisons are ranked number one in District 10, according to Dan Albaugh's D-10 Class AA rankings at d10wrestling.com.
Those wrestlers include George Mcguire (113 pounds), Brandon Puckly (126 pounds), Kody Pace (145 pounds), Craig Cihon (170 pounds) and Evan Daley (220 pounds).
"I'm not unhappy with the effort," said Youngsville coach Scott Ishman. "None of the guys went out there scared. They wrestled hard and did their best. What can you say other than Fort LeBoeuf is a great team with a great program. Hats off to them."
Two of three of Youngsville's victories on Wednesday came via the pin. 106-pounder Ryan McShane earned a second period pin of Roman Fronzaglia in their bout and 160-pound senior Josh Lewis needed just 21 seconds to pin LeBoeuf's Ryan Daley.
Youngsville's third and final win came from Hunter Proctor who won a 17-2 technical fall victory over Mitch Burge.
The loss drops the Eagles to 4-8 overall this season and 2-5 in region competition. Youngsville next wrestles Wednesday, hosting Strong Vincent.
