BOYS HOOPS: Stellar half lifts WCCS to victory

January 20, 2012
The Times Observer

ERIE - Warren County Christian School played its best game of the season - second half, at least - in a 57-38 New Penn Christian Conference win on Thursday at Erie Bethel.

"We picked up the pace very nicely in the second half, better defense and all of that," said WCCS coach Steve Zwald, whose Lions improve to 2-6 overall.

It was a total team effort, and the numbers tell the story:

Zwald said Carson Moore had 12 points in a first half in which the Lions trailed 26-22 at halftime, and Bethel started focusing on Moore after halftime.

WCCS teammate Josh Carpenter - playing with four fouls - had three 3-pointers, and Josh Wagonseller added another, in an 18-9 Lions third quarter. Then, when Erie Bethel switched again, Moore started taking over again in a 17-3 fourth quarter.

Moore finished with a game-high 18 points, 22 rebounds (15 in the first half), five assists and four steals. Carpenter had 11 points. Wagonseller 10 points and seven rebounds. Jamie Petrush 10 points and eight rebounds. Andrew Laird contributed seven steals.

"The second half was some of the best ball we've played all year," said Zwald, whose Lions next host Erie Bethel on Tuesday.
