BOYS HOOPS: Lopsided: Warren runs to Region 7 rout over Corry; Sheffield leaves Tidioute with lopsided win

CORRY - Warren's boys basketball team exploded for 32 points in the third quarter on its way to a 73-46 Region 7 win over Corry on Tuesday at Corry High School.

The Dragons (9-3 overall and 4-2 in region) were ice cold from the floor in the first half, but came out on fire in the third quarter as they turned a one-point halftime lead into a 26-point advantage.

"That 32-7 third quarter was the difference tonight," said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. "We struggled early with our patience and we couldn't get a bucket."

Warren's Hank Morrison uses a finger roll to put a ball past a Corry defender during their Region 7 basketball game Tuesday at Corry High School. Morrison finished with 17 points as the Dragons took down the Beavers 73-46.

Corry scored the first five points of the contest before Warren battled back to pull within one at 7-6. Corry looked like it might start to pull away, but Matt Sandberg and Preston McMeans hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions for the Dragons to keep it close. Corry held a slim 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Corry grabbed the momentum early in the second quarter, building a 26-20 lead. Hank Morrison then ripped off seven straight points, his only points of the half, as Warren closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a 29-28 lead into halftime.

The Dragons picked up right where they left off in the third quarter, this time it was Mark Davis scoring six straight points. Warren was able to create turnovers and push the tempo. Sandberg's second 3-pointer of the game put the Dragons up 46-33 and forced Corry to call a timeout. A technical foul was assessed to Corry during the timeout, Kory Thomas converted both free throws and the Dragons scored on the ensuing possession, essentially putting the game out of reach.

"Mark's six points to start the third quarter allowed us to increase the pressure (defensively) and his defense really changed the way (Corry) was playing," Berdine said. "Thomas hustled and scrapped at the top of our press and got us excited about playing defense."

Morrison and McMeans both finished with 17 points for Warren, with Morrison adding six steals. Davis had a double-double with 10 points and 10 blocks - 10 blocks in a game for the second time this season. Sandberg had 12 markers and five assists and Austin Jerman added seven points and eight assists.

Warren will look to pick up its second straight Region 7 win when it hosts East on Thursday.

Colin Fantaskey and Jacoby Passmore each scored 14 points to lead Warren to a 56-50 junior varsity victory. Andrew Hammersley also finished in double digits with 10 points.
