GIRLS HOOPS: Ike gets win at Titusville; Eagles’ win streak ends

January 13, 2012
By JON SITLER and TYSON HIMES (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

TITUSVILLE - Eisenhower improved to 3-7 overall with a strong second half and 37-30 win over Titusville on Thursday.

Lyssa Knapp and Halie VanOrd sparked a strong defensive effort in the second half for Ike, which used an 11-4 third quarter to break out to a lead. Alyssa Peterson had six points in the 11-point third quarter and six more in an 11-11 fourth to lift Ike.

"In the first half, we played well enough to take a lead on them, and (Carly) Kriner hit two 3's and a layup in the second quarter that tied the game at halftime," said Ike coach Mike Logue. "At halftime, I talked about having no senior leaders to say, 'get on my back' ... At this point in time, halfway through the season, it's time to step up and do it ourselves."

It obviously worked.

Knapp had at least two steals and a defensive tie up in the third quarter.

Logue told VanOrd at halftime she would only come out of the game if Titusville's leading scorer Kriner did as well. VanOrd played 1-on-1 with Kriner, holding her to four second-half point out of her game-high 15.

VanOrd added seven rebounds to Peterson's team-high eight for Class A Ike.

Class AAA Titusville is 1-11.

Ike broke a four-game losing streak and looks to start a winning streak on Monday, hosting Oil City.

Conneaut Valley 50, Youngsville 18

Going for its fifth straight win - third in a row in Region 3, Youngsville's girls basketball team lost big to first-place Conneaut Valley on Thursday at Youngsville High School.

The Eagles were looking to avenge two big losses to Conneaut Valley last year, but came out on the wrong end of a lopsided result again, 50-18.

The Indians started the game in a full-court press, which became a 2-3 zone when Youngsville got into its half-court offense. This strategy really threw the Eagles off of their game. They turned the ball over several times underneath their own basket, leading to easy buckets early on for the Indians.

When they got the ball into their half-court set, moving the ball through the zone then became a problem. Conneaut Valley started the game on a 15-0 run and ended the quarter with the 17-2 advantage.

In the second stanza, the Eagles were beating the press and zone more effectively, but then had trouble hitting their shots. They forced Conneaut Valley into committing turnovers with their own zone defense, but did not capitalize on their opportunities. On offense, the Indians ran a patient motion offense, getting open looks under the hoop on back door cuts and screens at the elbows.

After the half, the Indians threw the Eagles off balance yet again by coming out in an extended 3-2 zone. This forced a number of Youngsville turnovers and slowed down their offense. Youngsville equaled their total in the first two quarters with six points, but held Conneaut Valley to nine points in the quarter.

In the last quarter, the Indians did not let up on offense. They scored twice in the last minute of the game to win by 32.

Youngsville is now 6-5 overall, 2-4 in Region 3. Conneaut Valley is 9-2 and 6-0.

Amber Fox and Katie Chuzie combined for 12 of Youngsville's 18 points. Kristin Baker led Conneaut with 15.
