GIRLS HOOPS: Sheffield girls get first victory

DUKE CENTER - Talk about a turnaround.

Just 24 hours after a 61-17 loss to Kane, the Sheffield girls basketball team flipped the script entirely, defeating Oswayo Valley, 60-17, in the Otto-Eldred Tournament consolation game.

"It was like a switch went off and we finally started shooting the ball like we're capable of," said Sheffield coach Jeff Labesky. "Abby (Labesky) hit three big threes in the first half, stretching (Oswayo's) zone and allowing us to work the ball inside to our post players."

The Wolverines didn't know it at the time, but they scored all the points they would need in the first nine minutes of the game, building a 19-7 lead early in the second quarter. By halftime, that lead had grown to 36-13.

Jen Isenberg had the biggest game of her short varsity career, finishing with a game-high 21 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Labesky also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 assists and Juli Ely scored 10 points.

With the victory, Sheffield is now 1-7 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday when it visits Port Allegany.
