GIRLS HOOPS: Youngsville girls win Union City tourney title

December 30, 2011
By ALLEN SEYBERT (aseybert@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

UNION CITY - The Youngsville girls team is coming on strong.

After starting the season 2-4, the Lady Eagles are back at .500 after claiming the Union City Tournament championship Thursday with a 46-31 title game victory over Reynolds.

"I'm just very proud of the girls," said Youngsville coach Allison Kitchel. "They came out and hustled and played like I knew they were capable of playing."

Like Wednesday's victory over Union City, large portions of the game were played extremely equal. Against Reynolds, it was the Lady Eagles' dominance out of the lockerroom that proved to the biggest difference.

Youngsville led by seven points after a quarter and the margin remained at seven until halftime. In the third stanza, the Eagles outscored Reynolds by nine points, giving them a 16-point cushion to work with in the final quarter.

Amber Fox and Katie Chuzie were the two Eagles to reach double digits for the second straight day. This time, Fox led the way with 12 points and Chuzie finished with 10. Lindsey Lyon added nine points of her own, Kennedy Cratty finished with eight points and Jorie Clark had seven.

Seneca 48, Eisenhower 14

WATTSBURG - This wasn't the way the Eisenhower girls wanted to end 2011.

The Lady Knights shot just 14 percent from the floor on Thursday and never challenged the homestanding Seneca Bobcats during a 48-14 loss at Seneca High School.

Despite the loss, Eisenhower coach Mike Logue credited the strong defensive play of Halie VanOrd who limited Seneca's leading scorer Sarah Graham to just eight points. Six of those points came with VanOrd on the bench.

Only six Eisenhower players reached the scoring column in Thursday's loss and only four of those connected on field goals. Dakota Williams led the Knights with four points, Alyssa Peterson added three points and Lyssa Knapp, Brooke Stanton and Kari Santo added two points each.

The Lady Knights (2-5) return to action Tuesday at Bradford.

Seneca also dominated the junior varsity game, winning 41-13. Kearsten Maine's four points were tops for the Knights.

It was Sheffield's second loss to the defending AML champions in two weeks as the talented and deep Wolves proved to be just too much.

Abby Labesky led the Sheffield scorers with six points. Juli Ely added four points, Jen Isenberg three points and Ashley Davidson and Jade Moore two points each.

Friday's consolation game is scheduled to tip at 4:30 p.m.
