Warren Area High School senior Preston McMeans scored 44 points over his first three games - a 2-1 start for a Dragons boys basketball team looking to get back to the District 10 playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season. It was Warren's fourth game - its Region 7 opener - in which McMeans stepped up when the Dragons needed him most. Missing two players, including a starter, McMeans finished with 29 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 70-59 road win over East. Preston scored seven straight points in the second quarter as Warren took a 23-17 lead. He also scored 11 points in the third quarter - as many points as East scored in the quarter - as the Dragons took a 56-38 lead. This week, McMeans scored nearly half of Warren's points (18) in a 38-35 region win over Girard. Outstanding wrestling performances from Eisenhower's Jake Johnson and Trevor Spicer and Youngsville's Jaykup Durlin notwithstanding, McMeans stepped up in crunch time, and is the Times Observer Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's.
