Silent night

December 23, 2011
The Times Observer

Listen for it tomorrow night. It will be there.

Before bed, walk out your front door and listen.

There is a special silence about Christmas Eve, not just the absence of people on the street or traffic. It is truly a silent night, a silence that is palpable. It is as if the world stops briefly to rest, to contemplate the concepts of peace on earth and good will toward all men.

Whether or not you are Christian, if you aren't religious at all, you can still appreciate the promise of peace and good will. No single religion has exclusive title to those concepts.

As the Christian world celebrates the birth of a savior, all people can contemplate a message of peace, compassion and tolerance.

Sunday will be a day of feasting, family and friends, noisy dinner tables and happy conversations.

Tomorrow night, as the world moves from one day unto the next, there will be a special peace in the silence that everyone can savor, and pray, or at least hope, that some day all people on this planet can live in harmony.

In the silence you can almost feel it.
