FOOTBALL ALL-STARS: Craig region player of year, among Youngsville first-teamers

December 22, 2011
By ALLEN SEYBERT (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

The football season ended several weeks ago, but the accomplishments of the Youngsville High School football team will be discussed for years and years to come.

Not even a loss in the opening round of the District 10 Class A playoffs could take away from a perfect 10-0 regular season - the school's first undefeated season since 1966. The 10 wins also eclipsed the previous school record for wins in a season and gave the Eagles their first Region 2 championship.

Needless to say, the Eagles - as well as the 4-6 Eisenhower Knights and 2-8 Warren Dragons - were well represented when District 10 and Region 2 and 6 all-star selections were announced on Wednesday.

After a 10-1 Region 2 championship season, a number of Youngsville Eagles were named to the region first- and second-team all-star teams, by a vote of the region’s coaches. That list included Region Player of the Year, and All-District 10 all-star, Cory Craig. Craig was a first-team all-star at quarterback and D-10 all-star at defensive back.

While the Eagles certainly displayed a "team-first attitude" all season, it was senior quarterback and defensive back Cory Craig that pulled down the most hardware on Wednesday.

Craig, a senior, came back with a vengeance after missing his entire junior season with a collarbone injury. At quarterback, he completed 54 passes for 1,090 yards with 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions. In addition, Craig rushed for 670 yards and another eight scores.

Those accomplishments - and his five interceptions on defense - earned him a nod as a District 10 all-star as well as a first team Region 2 selection on offense and a second team selection on defense. Craig's biggest honor came when he was named Region 2 player of the year for the region champion Eagles.

Craig's Youngsville teammates were all over the Region 2 first team with eight other Youngsville players making the first team on at least offense, defense or special teams.

Offensively, senior receiver Dalton Maze (22 catches, 546 yards, 7 TD) was a first team selection as were senior offensive linemen Sawyer Dininny and Stephen Beattie.

Defensively, senior linebackers Sam Lucas and Sage Sivak, junior linebacker Jordan Gurdak and junior defensive back Rocco Gatta were also first-teamers. Dininny and Beattie were also selected to the first team for their work on the defensive line. Junior kicker T.J. Hardy was selected on special teams.

Eisenhower finished with one player on the Region 2 first-team as junior defensive back Nathan O'Brien was selected.

Three more Knights and two more Eagles wound up on the Region 2 second team. For Eisenhower, sophomore Jared Flaisman was selected on the offensive line, O'Brien was selected at kicker and Jordan Hefferman was named a second-teamer on both the offensive and defensive line.

For Youngsville, Ryan Rickerson was a second team offensive line pick and Maze was a second-teamer at defensive back.

While Warren was shut out from the Region 6 first team, but the Dragons did have four selections for second team status. Nathan Zigler, the leading receiver in all of District 10, was selected to the second team on both offense and defense at wide receiver and defensive back, respectively. Junior Austin Jerman was a second team punter and senior Mack Engstrom was a second team defensive lineman. Jerman led District 10 in passing, but was not voted as a region all-star at quarterback as a junior.

Out of District 9, five Sheffield Wolverines are 2011 Allegheny Mountain League North Division All-Stars, by a vote of the division's coaches.

On defense, George Fitch was voted to the all-star team at defensive end, Nate Charlton at defensive tackle, and Ike Nearing at linebacker.

On offense, Jeb Greto was voted an all-star for Sheffield, which qualified for the District 9 playoffs for the first time.

Nick Bonavita, who had nearly 900 total yards and nine offensive touchdowns, was voted an AML North all-star at running back.

The complete AML North all-star team was not provided to the Times Observer.

Here are the District 10, Region 2 and Region 6 all-star selections for the recently completed season:
