Ike Nearing's 17 points helped Sheffield's boys basketball team kick off its six-game homestand with a 59-37 win over Austin on Monday at Sheffield High School.
"Nearing had a huge game," said Sheffield coach Todd Fitch. "He was consistent through all four quarters."
The Wolverines' (4-2) first quarter point total of 17 would have been enough to take a tie into the locker room at halftime. But the extra 20 they got in the second quarter gave them a comfortable lead. In fact, Sheffield scored as many in the first half as Austin would through four quarters.
Fitch said that his team, which has been relying on turnovers to generate a transition game, was able to run some set plays against Austin.
"(Nick) Bonavita in the front court had a nice night and kept things moving for us," Fitch said.
Bonavita finished with 12 points. George Fitch had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Kalil Slaughter almost joined him, gathering eight rebounds to go along with his eight points.
Fitch is looking at this homestand as a way to set the Wolverines up for the rest of the season.
"We have three home games this week and we've got a chance to make a nice dent in our record," Fitch said. "These are all winnable games if we play hard, fundamental ball."
Sheffield won the JV game 43-19.
Dylan McNeal led the Wolverines with nine points and Nic Confer added eight points.
The Wolverines will host Otto-Eldred on Wednesday.
