WRESTLING: Warren tops Corry in opener

December 14, 2011
By JON SITLER and MITCH WILSTON (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

CORRY - Warren has inched closer to Corry the past couple of years, this time opening the season with a 39-33 Region 4 win at Corry Area High School.

"They gave us three forfeits, but it was a matter of some other guys having to step up, which they did," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger.

Robert Brown gave Warren its first points of the night and season with an aggressive pin in the third match at heavyweight. Two matches later, Nate Park earned a dominant 9-3 decision at 113 that could have been a major decision. Michael Card won a match Baldensperger thought would be a toss-up at 138 after a quick first-period pin. Finally, at 152, Drew Williams earned a pin in 1:43, "a key win," said Baldensperger, making the score 39-20 Warren with three matches remaining.

With Warren up, 39-26, and the match already decided, Dan Henry (at 170) and Chris McNeal (at 182) still fought hard to avoid giving up bonus points.

Henry lost a 10-1 major decision, avoiding the pin, and McNeal, coming off a year off, battled one of Corry's better wrestlers, Zach Morris, to a loss by decision.

"I guess you always want to win," said Baldensperger, whose Dragons host Franklin on Thursday. "I wanted to see our guys put forth a solid effort and everything we did wrong is stuff we can work on. You've got to have some heros out there each night that don't give up points, that get on their backs but don't get pinned."

Fort LeBoeuf 56, Ike 12

WATERFORD - Eisenhower started off its dual-meet wrestling season with a match against Fort LeBoeuf on Tuesday, losing, 56-12, to the returning state-runner up.

Going into the match, Eisenhower head coach Kris Black explained that this match would show where his team was.

"We just wanted to see where we were at," said Black. "(Fort LeBoeuf) places at States every year for a reason. They're good, and obviously we aren't there yet. It's definitely a learning curve, and we are on the way up the curve."

Tuesday's dual meet started at 170 pounds and Logan Head stepped out onto the mat first for the Knights. After losing 12-2, the Knights would briefly bounce back with two pins.

At 182 pounds, sophomore Trevor Spicer started off slow, getting taken down early in the first period. As the first period ran out, Spicer would earn a reversal to tie the score going into the second period. Spicer would choose to go down in the second, and after a quick escape and takedown he would pin his opponent in a cradle, giving the Knights a brief lead.

Jake Johnson would repeat Spicer's efforts when he quickly took down and pinned his opponent at 195 pounds. The 12-4 lead that Eisenhower enjoyed wouldn't last long as the Bison caught up quick and ran away with a 56-12 win.

"It was nice to get in there and show some of these guys what the next level looks like," said Black.

But even in the lopsided loss, Black saw positives. "Obviously with two pins, Spicer and Johnson are wrestling well. But Baker losing to Puckley by three points was a good match, too," he said.

The Knights will be back on the mat on Thursday when they host Seneca.

"We need to be more aggressive," said Black. "We need to stop waiting for the other guys to make a mistake and start having some offense.
