Every yard counts
Sheffield’s Brandon Johnston tries to break the tackle of an Otto-Eldred defender in the backfield in a 42-0 Homecoming victory Saturday afternoon at Sheffield High School.

On Sheffield's first possession, Nick Bonavita took a sweep to the right 65 yards for a score.

After a missed extra point, the Terrors got the ball back but were again forced to punt by the disciplined Sheffield defense.

This time Kalil Slaughter took the ball from quarterback Ike Nearing to the left side of the field 45 yards for a score. George Fitch pounded it into the end zone for the 2 point conversion to make the score 14-0.

Sheffield's Kwante Johnson took the ball and weaved in and out of several defenders for a 57-yard special teams touchdown at the end of the first quarter and the rout was on.

In the second quarter, things would tighten up a bit.

Otto had its best field position of the game after a Wolverine kick-off sailed out of bounds. More staunch defense by Sheffield spoiled the Terrors chances of any drive.

With 6:54 left in the half, the Terrors went for it on a fourth-and-one and converted the first down. This was only their second first down of the half to that point. Facing another fourth down later in the drive, they attempted a fake punt but it was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage. The Wolverines ended up with great field position on the Otto 45.

They took the ball down to the Otto 9-yard-line where Nearing would take it in on a keeper for the score with 55 seconds left in the half. Fitch finished the drive off with another two-point conversions and Sheffield led 28-0.

The Terrors tried to make something happen with little time left but Sheffield's Chauncey Traister picked off quarterback Dakota Vaughn. With 34 seconds left, Nearing threw up a pass to Johnson to the left side of the end zone for a 23-yard scoring strike.

Slaughter punched in the 2-point conversion to send the Wolverines into the half up 36-0.

To start the second half, Otto Eldred successfully converted an onside kick, trying to take the momentum back. This drive sputtered and Sheffield got the ball back.

With 6:02 left in the quarter, Bonavita busted out a 32-yard run to make the score 42-0. to end the scoring early.

The fourth quarter included an Evan Jamison interception and a fumble caused by Slaughter.

Sheffield is now 2-4 and will head to 5-1 Port Allegany Saturday for an afternoon District 10 Allegheny Mountain League North game.
