In cooperation with the USDA-Forest Service, the Allegheny Outdoor Club (AOC) continued refurbishing the first half-mile of the popular Morrison Trail in late September with Keystone Trails Association grant program funds. The long-time partners covered exposed hemlock roots with geotextile material and suitable bank gravel, improved drainages and constructed a walkway much needed work due to the heavy hiking traffic on this trail.
This marks the second time a portion of this trail has been improved with KTA funding. Goal in 2012 is to continue similar refurbishment of the trail to the intersection where it splits to the north and south.
The Morrison trailhead offers access to the 10.8 mile Morrison loop trail and a shorter 5.8 loop trail. The two loops offer a two-day backpacking experience or a short day hike. This trail leads to Morrison Campground, a boat access located on Kinzua Bay of the Allegheny Reservoir. Facilities at the trailhead include plenty of parking spaces, vault restroom, and informational signing.
Plowed during winter, the Morrison trailhead also provides access to the Rimrock Cross Country Ski Trail. The AOC has performed routine trail maintenance in this area for several years.
