Math is fun

Walkathon
Thank you to all those who came out on Sunday, Sept. 18, to the Sugar Grove AMVETS Post 50 for the Energy for Life Walkathon 5K or one-mile walk.
The walk benefited the Northwestern PA Group of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.
Community Safety Fair
Lander Volunteer Fire Department hosted its third Annual Community Safety Fair on Saturday, Sept. 17. We thank all the groups that came out to participate and be on board for this event.
The Community Safety Fair is for children and adults of all ages. There were informational tables and demonstrations in many areas of safety for home, work, and personal care. On display for community members was the Smoke House, blood pressure screenings, fire extinguisher safety, horse safety, motorcycle safety, school bus safety, 4-wheelers and race car safety. There were also emergency services on hand from the Stat MediVac, Russell Ambulance Service, Sugar Grove Ambulance Service, the Red Cross, and the Youngsville VFD.
Chicken and Biscuit
Dinner
Hessel Valley Lutheran Church in Chandlers Valley will be having a benefit chicken and biscuit dinner on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to help defray medical costs for Morgan Zaffino, 2 1/2 year old daughter of Mark and Melody Zaffino who was seriously injured in a lawn mower accident.
The cost for dinner is a free will donation.
Community Lunch
Schedule
A community lunch is provided at the local area churches. The first Friday of each month lunch is provided at the Mission Covenant Church. The second Thursday lunch is provided at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church. The third Wednesday lunch is provided at Hessel Valley Lutheran Church. All lunches begin at 11:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.
The Chandlers Valley United Methodist Church will also be having a community lunch on the fourth Monday of the month starting at 11:30 a.m. Their first luncheon will be held on Feb. 28. All are invited to attend.
Go Blue and Gold
The Knights' football team comes off an exciting win against Iroquois and plays a Saturday afternoon away game against Mercyhurst Prep starting at 1 p.m. Then on Friday, Sept. 30, the Knights will play another away match-up against Cambridge Springs at 7 p.m.
The Knights girls soccer team will play matches next week on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at home against Titusville at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 29, at Smethport at 6:30 p.m.
The Knights boys soccer team will travel to play matches on Saturday, Sept. 24, against Forest Area and then Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Mercyhurst Prep for a 4 p.m. match.
The girls volleyball team will be playing Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Sheffield Invitational at 9 a.m. and then on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Rocky Grove for a 7 p.m. match.
Recycling Drop-off
Anyone in the surrounding Sugar Grove area may drop off recycle material on the second and fourth Saturday of each month at Mortenson's on Route 69 (Jackson Run Rd.). There is no charge to drop off your recyclables. They will accept newspapers, magazines, phone books, catalogs, cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, etc as well as tin cans, aluminum cans, plastic bottles (numbers one and two bottles only) and beverage glass bottles only. Help the environment and recycle your materials each month.
Concerned Parent
Teacher Organization
The first meeting of the SGES CPT (Concerned Parent Teacher) Organization was held for the 2011-12 school year on Sept. 20 with a Parent Open House.
Teachers for the school year were introduced. A tour of the classrooms and cake served in the cafeteria followed the meeting. Many areas that parents can volunteer to help the school were discussed.
Volunteers are always needed in each room to help with the class homeroom parties. SGES homeroom parties scheduled for this year are Halloween, Oct. 31 with parade around town at 1 p.m.; Christmas Party, Dec. 22 from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.; Valentines Day, Feb. 14 from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.; and a Spring Party will be announced at a later date.
Box tops and soup labels are being collected again this year to help purchase items needed for the school.
SGES Picture Day is scheduled for Oct.20.
