Jammers win in big comeback

August 30, 2011
The Times Observer

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - A little homecooking was just what the doctor ordered for the Jamestown Jammers.

Having lost the last two games of a season-high 12 game road trip, Jamestown returned home to Diethrick Park Monday and delivered one of the greatest comebacks of the New York-Penn League season with an 8-7 victory over the Pinckney Division leading Auburn Doubledays.

Jamestown had trailed 7-4 entering the bottom of the ninth before scoring four runs in the last inning, including a walk-off RBI single from Brian McConkey.

By pitching the ninth inning, Curtis Petersen earned his third victory of the season. Jamestown's offense managed to produce eight runs on just eight hits, getting a pair of hits from Joshua Adams and Marquise Cooper and one each from Ryan Goetz, Eddie Rodriguez, Viosergy Rosa and, of course, McConkey.

Jamestown (34-35) will play one more game at Diethrick Park before returning to the road on Wednesday. That home game is Tuesday with these same Doubledays.

Things looked bleak for the Jammers in the first inning as Auburn touched up Jamestown starter Daniel Oliver for five first inning runs. Jamestown responded with an Adams RBI single in the bottom of the first, but still trailed 5-1.

Jamestown cut the deficit to one in the third with its first big inning of the night. Cooper was able to score on a wild pitch to make it 5-2 and Adams followed with a two-run homer that scored he and Austin Barnes, making it 5-4.

The momentum didn't last and Auburn added two runs in the eighth to make it 7-4 with the final half-inning approaching. Needing a miracle to avoid dropping a season-worst three games under .500, Jamestown got to work.

Rodriguez led off the inning with a walk and a Rosa single and Kentrell DeWitt walk loaded the bases. Nestor Castillo worked the third walk of the inning to force home a run and make it 7-5. With Barnes at the plate, Auburn's Aaron Barrett tossed a wild pitch, allowing two runners to score and tie the game at 7-7.

Barnes popped out to finish his at-bat, leaving the potential winning run on third with two out. McConkey delivered in the clutch, sending a single screaming to right, scoring Castillo and giving the Jammers a dramatic 8-7 victory.
