STATE COLLEGE - Jamestown got its most recent stop during its season-long 12-game road trip off to a nice start Tuesday, defeating State College 4-2 at Medlar Field.
With the victory, Jamestown improves to 31-32 on the season. Jamestown is currently seven games back in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division with only 12 games remaining on the 2011 schedule. It plays two more games in State College before wrapping up the long trip this weekend in Mahoning Valley.
Jamestown benefitted from a strong start by Matthew Neil to claim victory in Tuesday's game. Neil pitched six and two-thirds of an inning, allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked just one. Brad Mincey earned his fourth hold of the season and Alfredo Buret pitched the ninth for his team-leading 10th save.
Jamestown slugged out 11 hits in the win with Austin Barnes and Brian McConkey each responsible for three of those. Joshua Adams had two hits and Ryan Goetz, Eddie Rodriguez and Marquise Cooper had one each. Jamestown's 2-3-4 hitters were an impressive 8-of-12 in the victory.
The hits came early for the Jammers with the visitors plating two runs in the first off Spikes starter Trent Stevenson. Goetz and Barnes led off with singles and both advanced on a McConkey groundout. Adams followed with a one-out single that scored two runs.
The Jammers were able to hold State College scoreless into the seventh, pushing the advantage to 4-0 in the top of that inning. Cooper singled to start the stanza and stole second. He then scored on a Barnes double which helped set up a sacrifice fly by Adams.
State College got two runs off three hits in the bottom of the seventh, but would get no closer as Mincey and Buret shut the door.
