JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The momentum of Wednesday's victory over Aberdeen failed to carry into Thursday's outing as the Ironbirds handed the Jamestown Jammers a 5-1 setback at Diethrick Park.
Jamestown is now a half-game back of Mahoning Valley for the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead. The Jammers (22-18) will hold a Jamestown Falcons throwback night on Friday against visiting Aberdeen before hitting the road for a three-game series at the NYPL's best team - the Staten Island Yankees.
After playing to a scoreless tie through two innings, Aberdeen broke through with three runs in the top of the third. Glynn Davis started the rally with a one-out double and he scored when Joe Velleggia hit a towering three-run homer over the left field fence.
The 3-0 Ironbirds lead would hold up until the eighth inning when the visitors would send two more runners across the dish.
Velleggia was again in the middle of things, doubling after a Michael Givens walk to put two on. The first run of the inning scored on an RBI single by Wynston Sawyer and the second run scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Goolsby.
Jamestown battled back in the bottom of the eighth, but could only come up with one run to arrive at the game's ending margin. Marquise Cooper delivered a one-out double and moved to third on a two-out wild pitch. Austin Barnes followed with a run scoring single that allowed Jamestown to avoid the shutout.
Jamestown was held to six hits in the loss. Barnes had two of them and Terrence Dayleg, Pedro Mendoza, Cooper and Brian McConkey added one each.
Matthew Neil suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and dropped to 1-3 on the season.
