Jammers report with season less than one week away

June 11, 2011
The Times Observer

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers will report to town Monday, June 13, to get preparations underway for the start of the 2011 New York-Pennsylvania League season.

The short-season affiliate of the Florida Marlins will hold practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before breaking camp and traveling to Mahoning Valley Friday for the season opener against the Scrappers at 7:05 p.m.

While the Florida Marlins will assign players to Jamestown later in the week, the team's coaching staff is already in place.

David Berg will return for his second year as the team's manager. Last year, he guided the Jammers to a 45-32 mark and the third playoff appearance in franchise history. Berg spent seven seasons in the Major Leagues with the Florida Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays. The Roseville, Calif. native hit .269 with 21 home runs, 190 runs and 163 RBI in 582 career games. He will be joined by two new coaches this season.

Angel Espada was promoted from the Gulf Coast League and will serve as the team's hitting coach, while Blake McGinley will be the team's pitching coach.

Rigoberto Silverio is the only other holdover from last year's coaching staff. He will be back in Jamestown for his third year as a coach after playing with the Jammers in 2006 and 2007.

After starting the season at Mahoning Valley, the Jammers return home for a six-game homestand on June 20 against the Williamsport Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m.
