Kalil Slaughter was on the cover of the Times Observer's Spring Sports preview section in April. He came so close to winning a medal at the 2010 Track & Field Championships at Shippensburg University. He waited patiently when he wasn't hard at work, and knew all it would take was that one more chance to step up to the starting blocks. He got that chance on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, he broke the Sheffield school record, yet again, in the 100-meter dash with a 10.90 "FAT time" in the preliminaries. He was second to Clairton junior Trenton Coles in the semifinals and came .04 seconds from a Class AA state championship in the final, finishing with a Silver Medal. He earned a second medal for eighth place in the 200-meter dash. This after winning three District 9 titles and advancing to states in four events. Slaughter is the Times Observer Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's.
