Medea C. Rambish of Warren received the Linda Lehnert Award at a May 13 ceremony honoring graduate students at Widener University in Chester, Pa. The Linda Lehnert Award is given annually to a graduate student from Widener's Center for Education who has shown outstanding commitment to education as demonstrated by a minimum 3.8 grade point average, excellence in research and performance and a nomination by a minimum of two faculty members. Rambish graduated with her doctor of education degree from Widener at the university's May 14 commencement.

Several local Kent State University full-time students were named to the dean's list and president's for superior academic achievement during the 2011 spring semester.To be named to the dean's list, full-time students must have achieved a grade point average of 3.40 or greater and must have completed 12 or more letter-graded credit hours. To qualify for the president's list, full-time students must have an average in the semester of 4.00 and must have completed 15 or more letter-graded credit hours by the end of the semester.

Named to the dean's list were Melanie Park of Russell, Meghan Bogardus, Matthew Branco and Addison Dunn of Warren. Named to the president's list was Angela Gazdak of Warren.

Jonathan McAfoos received a degree in broadcast communications from Westminster College in May. He is the son of Gary and Joan McAfoos of Warren and a graduate of Warren Area High School.

Benjamin Kafferlin of Spring Creek has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester of 2011 at Ashland University. To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled full time and achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Kafferlin is majoring in political science and economics.

Scholarships and awards were presented during the annual college awards ceremony held at Jamestown Community College's Jamestown Campus on May 13. Recipients, noted by their hometowns, included:

From Warren: Joash Chamberlain, Computer Science Award; James Loree, Business Administration - AAS Award; Erica Smith, Elaine S. Johnson Memorial Award;

From Youngsville: Amy Stanbro, Elaine S. Johnson Memorial Award.

Trenton Berardi of Warren was named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y. He is a sophomore in the Inamori School of Engineering. Students must earn at least a 3.3 grade point average to qualify for dean's list. Berardi is a mechanical engineering major. A graduate of Warren Area High School, Berardi is the son of Bob and Rhonda Berardi of Warren.

Michael Greenlund, a 2007 graduate of Warren Area High School, graduated cum laude on May 7 from Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pa., with a B.S.B.A. degree in marketing, a B.S.B.A. degree in sport management, and a certificate in nonprofit management and leadership. While enrolled at RMU, he was active in numerous campus organizations including Nonprofit Management and Leadership Alliance, American Marketing Association, First Year Seminar Mentor, President of College Democrats and the Student Advisory Council.

Greenlund's professional experience during his tenure at RMU included sales associate with Jamestown Jammers, PR and marketing intern with Warren General Hospital, service project and field trip manager with Pittsburgh Cares, and student assistant in the Office of Student Civic Engagement.

Greenlund has accumulated more than 300 volunteer hours during his four years with a focus on Special Olympics and the YMCA Board of Directors. He was recognized with the following awards/certificates: Who's Who Among American College Students (two years), Ambassador of Equality, Dean's Scholar, and the Signature Leadership Award. The Signature Leadership Award at Robert Morris is awarded to the top 13 students each year who excelled in leadership as an undergraduate student.

Following graduation, Greenlund began full time employment as a Conference Program Manager with American Metal Market in Pittsburgh.. He is the son of Barbara and Timothy Greenlund of Warren.

Christopher P. Haight of Pittsfield and Chelsey E. Straight of Warren were two of 19 recipients of Gannon University's Archbishop John Mark Gannon Award, presented to the students with the highest grade point average upon graduation. The recipients were recognized for having 4.0 grade point averages. Haight is the son of Sharon K. Haight and is a graduate of Youngsville High School. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science. Straight also was recognized for having a 4.0 grade point average. She is the daughter of Susan Flasher. Straight graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology and is a graduate of Eisenhower High School.

Laura L. Long, an athletic training major from Pittsfield, and Angela R. Shick, a chemistry and pre-pharmacy major from Warren, were inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. To be considered for Chi Alpha Sigma, a student must earn a varsity letter in that academic year and earn at least a 3.4 overall grade point average.

Keith Ryan Yaegle graduated with high distinction, receiving his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering technology, from Penn State Behrend, Erie, on May 14. While at Behrend, Yaegle was the starting goalie for the men's water polo team, achieving All American Academic Team. He also was inducted into Tau Alpha Pi Honor Society. Yaegle passed the professional engineers exam his junior year. He has accepted a position in manufacturing engineering at SKF Aeroengine.

Sharaya Lynn Yaegle received her doctorate in physical therapy degree from Slippery Rock University on May 7. She completed clinical rotations at Mesa, Ariz.; WCA Hospital in Jamestown, N.Y.,; and the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago, Ill. She plans to start her career as a traveling physical therapist.

Michael A. Jones of Warren has been accepted at Gannon University, Erie, and will begin classes in the fall as a business major. He is the son of Paul and Dana Jones and is a senior at Warren Area High School. He is a member of the yearbook staff and strength club and has been named to the honor roll. Jones also is a member of the football team and is captain of the baseball team.
