SHINGLEHOUSE - The Sheffield boys track & field team improved to 6-4 with their third straight victory - a 90-51 triumph over Oswayo Valley on Monday.

The victory was paced by a balanced team effort as the Wolverines scored more points than the Green Wave both on the track and in the field. It also ensured Sheffield of its first winning season in many years.

"This is the first meet where we won both the track and the field," said Sheffield coach Bryan Gould.

According to Gould, Dejuan Leonard qualified for districts in the shot put - his first qualification of the season. In addition, George Fitch is continuing to close in on district qualifying in both the javelin and the discus.

Monday's meet was run on a cinder track, making the running speeds a little slower than usual. Despite that fact, standout Kalil Slaughter was his dominant self with wins in the 100, 200 and 400 relay as well as a field win in the long jump. Slaughter ran an 11.14 on the cinder track to win the 100 and teamed with Michael Torres, Dylan Reynolds and Eric Allen to win the 4 X 100 relay.

Brandon Mill dominated the hurdles events for Sheffield with wins in the 110 and 300 hurdles and the Wolverines also got one win each from several competitors. Mark Sprandle was the high jump winner, Leonard won the shot put and Fitch won the javelin. Sheffield's 1600 relay team of Torres, Sprandle, Allen and Reynolds was also victorious.

The Lady Wolverines suffered an 87-42 loss to Oswayo Valley, but performed well in defeat. Coach Janelle Elmquist was pleased with all of her competitors - especially her throwers.

"The throwers really stepped up today," said Elmquist. "They did a really good job and had some nice distances."

Both Abby Labesky and Julie Ely were winners in the throwing events. Ely won the shot with a toss of 24 feet, three inches while Labesky was tops in the discus with a throw of 52 feet, eight and one-half inches. Sam Moore paced the team on the track, placing second in each of the 100, 200, 400 and 800.

The Wolverines return to action Thursday when they compete at the annual Warren County Track Meet.
