JOHNSONBURG - The Lady Wolverines outhit Johnsonburg in the first game of Wednesday's softball doubleheader, 16-6.
However, the good news stopped there as fielding errors cost the Wolverines their first victory in a wild 13-12 loss at Johnsonburg High School. The second game was all Rams as the host team earned a three-inning, 19-0 victory.
"I was proud of how we hit the ball in that first game," said Sheffield coach Tracey Vile. "We just made too many errors in the field. We really should've won that game."
The Sheffield errors helped the Rams jump out to a 8-4 lead after five innings. In the top of the sixth, Sheffield broke out the bats and plated seven runners to take an 11-8 lead. Justine Barr and Brooke Hoffman delivered key RBI hits in the inning and a bloop single by Brittany Summers brought home a pair of runs.
The Rams would surge back ahead, 12-11, in the bottom of the sixth only to watch Sheffield tie the game in the top of the seventh with the equalizing run scoring on an error.
The game went into an extra inning where Johnsonburg sealed the victory with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
Barr and Hannah Vile each had three hits in the opener. Barr doubled and tripled. Kerrin Swartz added a pair of singles as did Hoffman, Paige Moldovan and Anna Baldensperger.
The nightcap was a forgettable outing for Sheffield as Johnsonburg scored twice in the first, nine more times in the second and eight times in the third to close out a 19-0 win. Swartz had the team's only hit in the second game.
Sheffield (0-5) returns to action Tuesday when it visits Otto-Eldred.
