First Class Speller
at SGES
It has been many years since Sugar Grove was able to claim the honored spot of having on of its students be the Warren County School District Spelling Bee Champion.
That all changed this year when Evan Honsberger, SGES 6th grader, brought home the championship award. Evan correctly spelled "zigzaggedness" in his final round of the WCSD Spelling Bee.
Evan said, "Zigzaggedness was not the hardest word in the spelling bee for me. The word that made me most nervous was irreversible." It didn't matter how nervous he was because at the end of the day, the winner was Evan. He won a plaque along with a $100 savings bond, a $125 check for his expenses to compete in Pittsburgh, a subscription to Britannica Online, and a Power speak online language course.
Evan is the oldest son of Brent and Marci Honsberger. He is making plans in March to travel to Pittsburgh to compete with the other district winners from Pennsylvania. He is busy studying the new list of words for the State Spelling Bee. If Evan is successful in Pittsburgh, he will be off to the nation's capital in May for the National Spelling Bee competition.
