Youth Volunteer Corps
The Youth Volunteer Corps is having a School Supply Drive at Youngsville Elementary Middle School from January 26th through February 7th. Items to be collected include pencils, pens, notebooks, paper and crayons. All donated items will go to the Salvation Army to distribute to children in Warren County at the start of the school year as well as throughout the year. John and Savannah receive the Joan Jarrett Award at YEMS.
The Class of 1959 will host a Reunion Luncheon on July 12, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. in the YHS cafeteria for graduating classes that are 50 years or older. The Class of 1960 is invited as guests. Any classmates interested in helping with the luncheon can contact Ray or Norma McCanna at 563-4084 or attend the regularly scheduled breakfast at Richard's Restaurant on the third Thursday of each month at 9:00 a.m.
YEMS Kindergarten
The Kindergarten registration for Youngsville Elementary Middle School will take place Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 9-11 a.m., 1:00-2:30 p.m., and 4-6 p.m. Please pick up packets at the YEMS and return completed packets on registration day.

Free Throw Shooting
Championship
On Saturday, Jan. 22, the Knights of Columbus St. Luke Council #13006 of Youngsville held their 2011 Youth Free Throw Shooting Championship. These contestants will move on to the District Level Championship on Sunday, Feb. 6, in Warren.

Children's Theater
Barb Luce, camp coordinator and director, has announced a change in the performance of the Revitalization of Youngsville's Children's Theater Camp from Rapunzel to the Elves and the Shoemaker. Camp will still be held July 11-16. For further information call Luce at 563-4936.
GeoCache Woodstock
Sonia Probst, Asset Enhancement vice president for the Revitalization of Youngsville, is working on a survey with Kathy Reitinger, Regional Main Street Coordinator, about local businesses. The survey is to find out which businesses have or need: debit/credit card capability, offer wi/fi, operating days and hours, menu access on line, loadable menus for a web page, food delivery options, and availability of public restrooms.
All of this is important because of the GeoWoodstock 9 (GWS9) event on July 2. Predictions are estimating 6,000 to 7,000 people will be in the county at the fairgrounds and will be looking for shopping, dining, and entertainment, needing to become familiar with the area.
Reitinger emphasizes, "Most of them will have blackberry phones, iPhones, laptops, net books and other computer driven devices and we want them to go to the places that can fully serve them and let the visitors know where to find food for families or taverns for a cold drink and food."

Benefit reminder
Boy Scout Troop 22 is having a Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Garland Fire Hall. Donations for the dinner will be collected at the door. Dinner will include spaghetti, bread, salad, dessert, and drink. Take outs are available. There will also be a basket auction starting at 6:00 p.m. Examples of baskets to be raffled will be: Car Care, Golf, Gardening, Barbecue, Dips, Family and Tools. Proceeds benefit the trip the boys in Boy Scout Troop 22 will be taking in the summer of 2011. Please contact Dave Mourer at 563-7303 for further information.
BVSP
The Steering Committee for Friends of the BVSP (Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool) will hold a community meeting, on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Youngsville fire hall starting at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend. There is also a community Facebook page, 'Friends of BVSP', that will have updated information as available, as well as steering committee members and email addresses.
Hunt for Cupid update
The Revitalization of Youngsville is hosting a Hunt for Cupid contest at local businesses. The contest runs Feb. 5 through 12. Entry forms will be available to those 18 or older, one per person, at Northwest Savings Bank in Youngsville, the Youngsville Pharmacy, and the Youngsville branch of PNC. Contestants will need to find 10 Cupids displayed at local Youngsville businesses. Completed entry forms need to be turned in by 5 p.m. on Feb. 12 at the Allegheny Artistry. Winners will be drawn from correctly completed entry forms. First prizes is Cash, second prize is Dinner for two, and third prize is Candy and Flowers. Additional business sponsors are: Allegheny Artistry, The Black Cat, and Northwest Savings Bank.
YEMS
To have a student recognized for an important accomplishment is wonderful in the eyes of a school.
"Youngsville Elementary Middle School (YEMS) was blessed with not one award winner this past week, but two", proudly explains Lori Hahn, YEMS 8th grade World History teacher. Each year, the Joan Jarrett Award is given out by the Pennsylvania Middle School Association (PMSA) to honor students 'in the middle'. The focus of this award is not purely academic, but also rests on the character and volunteer work of the student. Winners of this award should demonstrate leadership abilities, good citizenship and should have made positive contributions to their school and community. Hahn announced the winners, "Eighth grader Savannah Pollow and seventh grader John Burrows were both selected by the PMSA as models of this award."
Hahn details the reason Savannah was chosen. "She has shown her character through her leadership both in and out of the classroom. She is a determined 8th grade student who puts academics, volunteering, and helping others at the top of her priority list. Since her educational career began in kindergarten, Savannah has worked very hard in the classroom. Along with consistently making honor/merit roll, she acts as a role model within the school setting. Savannah strives to do her very best at every task presented to her. If Savannah finishes an assignment or project earlier than some of her classmates, she is always willing to help those who may be in need of extra support. Savannah also contributes to the school's "Reading Buddy" Program in which she goes to primary grades within the school and reads to younger children. Outside the school setting, Savannah also makes many numerous positive contributions.
"Savannah has volunteered for a camp called 'Camp Halo.' It was a week-long camp where she acted as a counselor for less fortunate children. Savannah also helped volunteer with the Adagio Health Race held this past fall. During this race she helped direct runners and walkers to the finish line.
"As if those events do not keep Savannah busy enough, she has also assisted in such activities such as babysitting kindergarten students during events at the school, helped paint horse stalls at the local fairgrounds, taught a class at her church for 2 to 6 year-olds, went Christmas caroling, gave gift baskets to the elderly of the Ruth M. Smith Nursing Home, and helped organize a garage sale for her younger cousin who has cystic fibrosis. Of all of the events that she has participated, however, the event in which Savannah was most passionate about is that of a spaghetti dinner. She assisted her family with hosting this dinner for her 5-year old cousin, Logan, who has cystic fibrosis. She acted as a waitress to earn funds and help find a cure for this disease. Though Savannah does all of these activities, it is her humility and honesty that caused her teachers to nominate her for this award."
The second winner is also very commendable as Hahn tells of his award worthiness. "John is another excellent example of the purpose of the Joan Jarrett Award. Within the school setting, John has stayed committed to excelling to his fullest potential. In the past year, John represented himself all three times for the 'Middle Level Honor/Merit Breakfast' held at various times throughout the school year.
"He also takes great pride in being a key member of the school's Recycling Club. This past year, John was instrumental in collecting a total of 850 pounds of copy paper and 600 pounds of newspaper. John also makes many numerous positive contributions outside the school setting. He has been a volunteer at the Rouse Nursing Home. There he assisted in handing out water to those elders who were in need. John can also be seen during summer and winter months assisting various neighbors along his street by volunteering to mow, rake leaves, and shovel snow. He is also a member of the local Boy Scouts Troop #43. As a Boy Scout, John takes pride in the many volunteer efforts and positive contributions he has made."
Hahn concludes, "The faculty and staff of Youngsville Elementary Middle School are proud of all of the accomplishments of Savannah and John. Both award winners will be presented their award at the state middle school conference on March 4, 2011 in Lancaster PA. Thank you Savannah and John for all that you do!"
