Eisenhower is right in the thick of things after a 54-37 Region 3 win over Cochranton Tuesday at Eisenhower High School.

The Knights are 2-1 and in second place in the region, behind Conneaut Valley - Ike's only region loss.

Eisenhower coach Steve Norris said the Knights, which are 5-9 overall, took the ball to the hoop and forced Cochranton into foul trouble.

Ike made 13 free throws in the fourth quarter alone, and was 16-of-25 at the line for the game.

Aaron Lundmark gave the Knights a different leading scorer with 14 points and has joined Josh Deppas and Tre Frank to give the Knights a trio of scorers. Colin Shine came off the bench for nine points.

"We had a good all-around effort inside and out," said Norris.

Johnsonburg 65, Sheffield 60

Johnsonburg's 5-0 run in the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter thwarted Sheffield's comeback attempt, as the Rams defeated the Wolverines, 65-60, Tuesday at Sheffield High School.

Johnsonburg used a 6-0 run to grab an eight-point lead with just three minutes left in the game, but Sheffield answered with an 11-3 run of its own to tie the game at 60-60 with 30 seconds to play.

The Rams were able to steal an inbounds pass and convert it to a layup to start their final run.

"A close game like this, you can't ever go back to one play (as the deciding factor)," said Sheffield coach Todd Fitch, whose Wolverines are 6-8 overall after five straight losses.

Fitch added later that he had called a "standard" inbounds play, and probably should have changed the call to keep Johnsonburg off-guard.

Sheffield held a one-point advantage after the first quarter, and both teams traded field goals in the early part of the second quarter before the Wolverines got 3-pointers from Mark Sprandle and Nick Bonavita to build a four-point lead, 33-29, heading into halftime.

Both teams came out of the locker room cold before Bonavita hit another 3-pointer for the Wolverines. Johnsonburg completed a 3-point play with a minute remaining in the period to take a 44-42 lead. Sheffield answered with a field goal on its next possession, but the Rams got a bucket with just five seconds left in the quarter to take a 46-44 lead into the fourth quarter - a lead they would never relinquish.

Again, both teams traded buckets early in the fourth quarter, but Johnsonburg hit a 3-pointer and got some transition points as part of its 6-0 run. Sheffield was able to answer with a 8-1 run to cut the lead to 58-57 with 1:24 left. Johnsonburg hit the front-end of a one-and-one to push the lead back to two, then grabbed the rebound on the missed free throw and again went 1-of-2 from the line to take a 60-57 lead with 33 seconds left.

Sheffield's Brendan Winslow answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 60-60 and Johnsonburg lost possession on the ensuing inbounds pass to set-up the Sheffield play on which the Rams would steal and grab the lead for good.

Sprandle and Bonavita led a trio of double-digit scorers for Sheffield with 17 points each. The pair combined to hit nine 3-pointers in the game. George Fitch added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines. Ike Nearing added six points in his first game back from injury and Kalil Slaughter chipped in with four points.

"We're a shooting team this year," Todd Fitch said. "George had another nice game inside for us, and I thought we needed to get Kalil the ball more inside to take advantage of the matchups."

"Johnsonburg's a super good ball club," coach Fitch said. "When we played them last time, we scored 26 points the entire game. We moved the ball well and got up and down the court. There's a lot of little factors, a missed foul shot, a missed jump shot and it's a different game."

Johnsonburg won the junior varsity contest, 52-35. Dylan McNeal led Sheffield with 12 points and Chris Pederson added 11 points.
