Time for Winterfest

Chapman State Park will see lots of fun snow activities this weekend

Warren County Winterfest is set for Friday through Sunday, Jan. 21-23, at Chapman State Park in Clarendon.

Cardboard box derby: Sunday, race registration, 1 p.m.; judging and rules meeting, 1:30 p.m; races begin, 2 p.m.

Snow sculpting contest: Saturday, noon-3 p.m.; judging, 3 p.m.; winners posted, 4 p.m.

Explore the Trails (from the west parking lot: Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be snowshoes and cross-country skis for public use for free. Ski clinic for beginners, 1 p.m.;. guided trail tours, 2 p.m.; snowshoe clinic and guided hike for beginners, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.

If ice allows, Warren's Champions on Ice, a figure skating exhibition by the Jamestown Skating Club, will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday. Open ice skating will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and "learn to ice skate" will be held form 10 a.m. to noon Sunday. A limited number of skates will be available for free.

Ice fishing contest: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with prizes awarded at 3 p.m. For fishermen age 16 and older, a Pennsylvania fishing license is required. An ice fishing demonstration will be provided by Gander Mountain. An ice safety demonstration will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday by the Glade Township Water Rescue Team.

Sleigh rides will be provided from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (rides start near the event tent)

Food and craft vendors will be on hand from 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be free hot chocolate in the warming hut, courtesy Kondak's Community Market. A food vendor will be on hand on the sled dog race side of the park from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. all three days of the event.

Geocaching events will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Environmental Learning Center. A Winterfest Geo-Meet and games will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. There will be coordinates for temporary caches Saturday and Sunday.

Meet the Mushers will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Kalbfus Rod & Gun Club on Chapman Dam Rd. A spaghetti dinner also is planned at Kalbfus from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday (cost will be a $6 donation for adults, $3 for children younger than 10).

The Jim Lobdell Memorial Sled Dog Races will include: mid-distance, 32 miles, 9 a.m. Friday. Saturday and Sunday will include Ski-Jorning, 9 a.m.; four-dog sports, 10 a.m.; six-dog sports, 10:30 a.m.; two-dog junior, 11 a.m.; four-dog pro, 11:30 a.m.; six-dog pro, 1:30 p.m.; unlimited, 2:30 p.m.; pee wee, 2:40 p.m.; and the awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (All times are approximate). The IWPA Weight Pull will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Polar Bear Plunge will be held at 1 p.m. .Saturday, with proceeds to benefit The Salvation Army.

Tails of the Tundra, Siberian Husky Rescue is planned for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
