SAINT MARYS - Sheffield had more than a little trouble with perennial District 9 powerhouse Elk County Catholic Saturday, dropping a 62-17 decision to the Crusaders at Elk County Catholic High School.
According to Sheffield coach Mike Bancroft, the Lady Wolverines struggled to find open shots throughout the contest. The Crusaders were especially effective on Sheffield's leading scorer Kristie Steffan, holding her to seven points in the contest.
The Wolverines were limited to just seven points in the first half as the hosts built a commanding 36-7 advantage. Things improved slightly in the second half, but the Wolverines still found themselves outscored 26-10.
Despite being limited to seven points, Steffan was still the team's high scorer. Hannah Vile and Abby Labesky each added three points and Brittany Summers and Hanna Fitch scored two points apiece.
The Wolverines (1-7) return to action Tuesday when they travel to Ridgway.
Sheffield's junior varsity team was also defeated by Elk County, 36-11. Kerrin Swartz's three points was tops for the Lady Wolverines.

LAWRENCE PARK - The momentum of Tidioute's first victory of the season carried over into Saturday's contest at Iroquois.
Unfortunately it didn't translate into a win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Playing just two days after its first victory of 2010-2011, Tidioute Charter played well, but fell short against the Braves, 43-29.
The Braves actually built a 41-19 lead after three quarters, but the Lady Bulldogs refused to roll over. TCCS kept fighting and outscored the hosts in the fourth quarter, 10-2, to close the final margin.
Perhaps the biggest hindrance to the TCCS effort was the performance from the foul line. The Lady Bulldogs finished the night just 13-of-33 from the charity stripe.
Alexis Morrison led a balanced Bulldog attack with 10 points. Cassie York scored eight more markers and Loralee Lindemuth finished with seven points.
TCCS (1-8) doesn't have to wait long before getting back on the court. It visits Erie East on Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs also dropped the junior varsity contest, 30-22. No other information was provided to the Times Observer.
