BOYS HOOPS: Win column: Dragons grab region win; Sheffield cruises

January 5, 2011

A win doesn't always leave a coach satisfied.

Warren coach Jeff Berdine was unhappy with his team's inconsistent play despite a 66-54 region victory over Harbor Creek Tuesday at Warren Area High School.

"Tonight started a big stretch of games for us and I was hoping for a little better start as far as our intensity and focus go," said Berdine. "Our inability to play 32 minutes with mental focus showed tonight. We were good at times, but also very poor at times and we can't beat good teams playing like that."

Berdine said that the Huskies were playing without four of their top seven players Tuesday, making the victory that much more disappointing.

Warren appeared to be in control for much of the first half, but the Huskies never went away on the scoreboard as the home team led by just four at the break.

However, in the second half, the Dragons used a tenacious half-court pressure defense to take control of the game. Using steals to get easy transition buckets, Warren's 18-5 run in the middle third and early fourth quarter put the game out of reach for Harbor Creek.

Berdine was especially happy with the play of guard Joel Stewart, who was responsible for many of those steals and easy buckets as well, as the rebounding efforts of Preston McMeans, Tyler Fantaskey and Hank Morrison down the stretch.

Four Warren players reached double figures for the night, led by Morrison's 14 points. Kory Thomas chipped in 13 points, McMeans 12 more and Stewart 10. McMeans filled the stat sheet in many categories, adding six boards, four assists, five steals and three blocks.

Fantaskey was the team's top rebounder with seven and Mark Davis blocked three shots off the bench.

The Dragons (7-2, 1-2 region) continue a busy region week on Thursday and Saturday when they visit Fort LeBoeuf and Oil City, respectively. The team returns home Monday to face General McLane - its fourth region game in a span of seven days.

Warren's junior varsity team was a 57-32 winner. Davis and Austin Jerman scored 14 points each in the win.

Sheffield 81, Tidioute 44

The Wolverines used strong efforts from Mark Sprandle, Kalil Slaughter, George Fitch, and Nick Bonavita - all scoring in double figures - to bury Tidioute Charter early Tuesday at Sheffield High School.

The Wolverines had a 10-point lead after one quarter, extended it to 17 at halftime, and cruised to the easy win. Eleven players played for the Wolverines and eight scored in the victory. Sprandle led the Wolverines with 20 points. Slaughter and Fitch both had double-doubles with 16 points and 15 points, respectively. Slaughter and Fitch had 12 rebounds each. Nick Bonavita also scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points, including three 3-pointers for 6-3 Sheffield.

"To be consistent at this point, I'm tickled to death at that, and hopefully we can build off that (with the stretch we're coming into). The next three games will be a test for us," said Sheffield coach Todd Fitch. Sheffield may soon get Ike Nearing back from illness.

Matt Brown led the Bulldogs with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Shaun Sitterley scored 13 points and the Tidioute scoring was rounded out by Kendrick Morrison, who had nine points.

Tidioute drops to 0-6 with the loss.

"This was certainly our best game of the year," said TCCS coach Dave Manning. "We got our offense going and put up our highest point total yet. We will continue to improve if we just take things one game at a time."

Sheffield also won the J.V. contest, 40-9. Dylan McNeal led Sheffield with 14 points in the win.

Maplewood 38, Eisenhower 30

GUYS MILLS - A tale of two halves amounted to a loss for the 1-7 Knights Tuesday at Maplewood High School.

Eisenhower led 24-13 at halftime, but was outscored 25-6 in the second half, including 15-0 in the fourth quarter in Maplewood's eight-point win.

"Besides not being physical, we're just so undisciplined, and it's a chore every game to remain disciplined," said Norris. With a young team of freshman and sophomore starters, Norris thinks the Knights will get it, and play for four quarters like they did on Tuesday for the first half.

Josh Deppas and Tre Frank scored eight points each in the loss.

Maplewood is 2-6.

Ryan Williams had 14 points in a 37-21 junior varsity win for Ike.

The non-region game got out of hand in the second quarter in Youngsville's home loss.

Youngsville was tied 8-8 after one quarter but a 26-8 Conneaut second quarter essentially put the game away.

Broc Horn had 11 points in the loss.
