Continuing a tradition begun in 1966, a community soup pot, a scrumptious turkey dinner, and an enlightening presentation will combine to make a memorable Thanksgiving with the Birds at the Audubon Center and Sanctuary.
Green homes builder David Lanfear's talk on "Living Roofs: Not Just Eye Candy!" will highlight this year's event on Saturday, Nov. 20. Lanfear's work includes strawbale construction, living roofs and solar hot water systems.
At 11:30 a.m., folks will gather around the outdoor soup kettle for which each is asked to bring a small container of their favorite warm soup to add to the mystery brew. Chris and Dave Leitch will again host the soup kettle.

Cathie and Charles McKenzie will host the indoor buffet dinner at 12:30 p.m. Audubon will provide the roasted turkeys and beverages for which a $4 donation is appreciated. Participants are asked to bring a side dish and their own table service.
During his 1:30 p.m. presentation, Lanfear will describe how his work on living roofs began with a backyard experiment and has grown to almost 5,000 square feet of planned or installed green roofs in the Buffalo area, with many more in the design phase. "Living Roofs: Not Just Eye Candy" is intended to leave you with a full appreciation of the value of green roofs, from their beauty to their ability to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
Participants are invited to walk the Sanctuary at 2:30 p.m., following the talk.

The Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary is located at 1600 Riverside Road, off Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren. Winter hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Saturdays, Sundays 1-4:30 p.m. bald eagle viewing and trails for hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are open dawn to dusk daily.
