Union City runs away from Eisenhower

UNION CITY - In a long, muddy, and heavily-penalized game, Union City ended Eisenhower's last hope for a win in a 31-0 mud bowl.

Union City's Greg Reinke made his presence known to the Knights early, scoring off of a 27-yard run.

After putting together several defense stops on Union City's next possession, Eisenhower was put in a bad position after a fumble on its own 20-yard line. Reinke seized the opportunity for the Union City Bears (5-4 overall and 5-3 in Region 2) and pounded his way into the end zone with a 20-yard run, his second score of the night at the very close of the first quarter. The following extra point bounced off the field goal bar, leaving the score 13-0.

A brutal second quarter filled with penalties made it impossible for either team to score any more points, and at half time the score remained 13-0.

In the second half, Union City came back with a rejuvenated running game, and despite the sloppy conditions managed to run the ball past the Knights' young defense.

Eisenhower's Tommy Fedorchuk pulled in Eisenhower's lone reception of the night, from quarterback Aaron Lundmark, in his final high school football game. It was also standout Zach Hitchcock's last game on a team of six seniors out of 38 players on the opening-game roster.

Despite going 0-10, Eisenhower coach Jim Penley said the season was anything but a failure.

"The experience these young guys got this year was awesome," said Penley. "I've never been so proud of a team, they showed up every week and fought."
