JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - A win just wasn't in the cards.
Williamsport's Ryne White hit a two-out three run homer off of Jamestown's Michael Brady in the top of the ninth inning to hand the Jammers a 7-4 loss Friday at Diethrick Park.
Thanks to Batavia's 7-3 victory over State College, the loss dropped the Jammers into second-place in the New York-Penn Baseball League Pinckney Division - just a half-game behind the Muckdogs.
The Crosscutters, currently the closest team to the Jammers in the wild card standings, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Friday's game by scoring time and time again off of Jamestown starter Rett Varner.
The Jammers (38-28) wouldn't stay down for long and soon worked their way back into the contest. First, Jamestown cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Aury Diaz. However, most of the Jammers' damage came in the sixth inning.
Marcell Ozuna led off the inning by extending his team record for single season home runs. The blast was his 19th of the short season and cut the Crosscutters' lead to 3-2. Ryan Fisher was next hit by a pitch and a double by Aaron Senne moved both into scoring position.
Fisher later scored to tie the game on an RBI groundout by Noah Perio and Senne scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Brent Keys. Thanks to the rally, Jamestown took a 4-3 edge into the top of the eighth inning.
Unlucky for them, Williamsport wasn't done yet.
They tied the game in the eighth on a solo homer by Carlos Alonso and worked another rally in the ninth off of Jammers reliever Michael Brady. Brady entered the game with a 1-0 record with a miniscule ERA of 0.36.
Despite his strong season, Brady ran into quick trouble in the ninth. He gave a single to lead off the inning and a two-out double put two runners in scoring position. Before Brady could get the third out, White cracked a three-run homer over the left field wall to put Williamsport up for good, 7-4.
Jamestown got one runner on in the ninth, but couldn't muster a rally before ultimately falling for the fourth time in five games.
