ALTOONA - Before Warren wrestlers Amani Bosko and Curt DeLattre can travel to Hershey this weekend for the PIAA Wrestling Championships, they're going to have to get back from Cloud 9.

The two put on about as impressive a showing as Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger could have hoped for on Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Region Class AAA Championships at Altoona High School.

Bosko finished second in the 125-pound weight class - his predicted finish after winning the District 10 title the week before. DeLattre exceeded expectations to win the third-place match at 145 pounds.

After advancing to regionals for the third straight season, both have advanced to the PIAA tournament for the first time.

"Thinking about it and it's like, 'Wow, I'm going to states,'" Bosko said on Sunday.

After a bye and then a quarterfinal win on Friday, Bosko got the all-important semifinals win, a 13-6 decision over Punxsutawney's Neko Cappella on Saturday, to automatically advance to states. The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance.

"The kid he faced in the finals is very, very good," said Baldensperger.

Senior Mitchell Port of Bellefonte remains undefeated after pinning Bosko in 3:37.

"In the quarterfinals match he wrestled the night before, he made a couple mistakes," said Baldensperger of Bosko (32-5). The next day he wrestled "with a lot of determination," Baldensperger added. "That was his goal, to get to states, and he accomplished that goal."

DeLattre (34-7) had to win his last match, and on his birthday, no less.

After two wins on Friday to advance to the semifinals, DeLattre was pinned in 25 seconds on Saturday by a beast of a wrestler in nationally-ranked Andrew Alton, who went on to win regionals and is undefeated on the season.

"The Alton kid, realistically, we weren't going to beat," said Baldensperger. DeLattre was on the same level as all the kids in his weight class "except for one," he said.

"The outpour of emotions after his third trip there, to make it (to states) he beat the kid from Prep that beat him (earlier in the season)," said Baldensperger. "The sigh of relief, he just about broke down. You can't create (those feelings)."

DeLattre called making states, "the best birthday present ever."

"I was just overwhelmed" after decisioning Prep sophomore Garrett Chase, 3-2, he said. "He beat me before; now I had to beat him when it counted. It feels awesome."

That was after a 5-4 overtime decision in the consolation semifinals.

The emotions spilled over on Saturday - even in a loss.

Warren senior Colter Johnson (26-11) was eliminated in the 189-pound consolation semifinals in a 4-3 decision to Lewistown's Tyson Searer.

After starting with two pins on Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals, Johnson lost there, a 1-0 decision to K.J. Walters of Altoona, to get sent to the consolation rounds.

"I'm still trying to let it sink in what a roller coaster of emotions I went through," said Baldensperger. "The bittersweet emotions of having Amani get to the finals, and having Colt just miss, losing by a point in the consolation round. (Colter Johnson is) just starting to blossom."

Baldensperger said Johnson will play football in college, but would also be a successful wrestler there.

"(At Alfred University, former Warren wrestler) Mike Gustafson is coaching up there, so Colt's probably going to have to find his way on the wrestling team," said Baldensperger. "We're hoping that he does. His dad wrestled there for two years then went to Virgina Tech.

"We just wanted to get him down there (to regionals) because I really, in my gut, had this feeling he could really make something happen," said Baldensperger.

He was a stalling point away from overtime in the semifinals against Walters, who entered the match at 33-1.

Baldensperger said DeLattre and Bosko should "enjoy the moment through (to Monday's practice), and try to refocus and try to bring home a couple medals, because they both can definitely do it."

Northwest Region

Class AA

SHARON - Youngsville senior Brad Lucas and Sheffield senior Jimmy Hahn didn't start out as well as the Dragons, both 0-1 on Friday.

Hahn lost a tough 9-7 decision to Fort LeBoeuf's Brandon Bradney on Friday at 215 pounds and was pinned by Seneca's Matt Mongera on Saturday; Mongera eventually defeated Bradney in the consolation finals for a trip to states.

"We had an uphill battle with those D10 wrestlers," said Sheffield coach Bryan Gould. "Being at regionals two years in a row is certainly an accomplisment, especially having only two years of varsity experience. Pretty amazing, really."

Lucas, on the other hand, had some work to do.

After a decision loss on Friday, Lucas decisioned D.J. Skraba, 9-4, in the consolation quarterfinals and pinned Brockway's Nathan Hartless inthe consolation semifinals for a shot in the consolation semifinals.

"You look at it from two different perspectives; I think it was a good case scenario because we had a chance," said Youngsville coach Philip Knapp. "Although we got pinned in that final match, he got caught going for it. What more can you ask for?"

Mercer's Kyle Mariacher pinned Lucas in the third period in the consolation finals for a trip to the PIAA Class AA tournament.

Both Mariacher and Lucas had the same scenario, losing their first matches and fighting back through the consolation rounds.

How tight the weight class was, according to Knapp, was proven by the fact that Lucas pinned Mariacher at the District 10 tournament and Mariacher pinned Lucas at regionals.

"I think that there was disappointment knowing you were that close, but he left nothing in the tank," said Knapp. "That's exactly what I expect a kid to do in a last chance scenario. We should be very proud of how brad wrestled."

It's not an easy feat to advance to the PIAA tournament, said Knapp.

"The guys from Youngsville wish the guys luck from Warren that are going," he said.
