World Day of Prayer
The Sugar Grove Community will hold their annual World Day of Prayer Service on Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church in Chandlers Valley. There will be special music and times of prayer for situations happening in our world today. The service is sponsored by our local Sugar Grove Ministerial organization. The churches involved with the service are the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, The Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, The First Presbyterian Church, The Mission Covenant Church, The Chandlers Valley United Methodist Church, and the Hessel Valley Lutheran Church.
Broadway Delights
The Eisenhower Senior Choir continues to prepare for the upcoming trip to New York City by presenting "Broadway Delights," a program of Broadway show tunes on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The Choir Support Club is selling $5 tickets in advance for the evening. The ticket entitles the holder to coffee and a choice of delicious desserts, and cabaret seating for the presentation of many popular Broadway tunes sung by our EMHS soloists, Dreamers, Fantasia, and a medley by Senior Choir. Tickets must be purchased in advance from any choir booster or by calling the EMHS music room at 757-9357 and leaving a message for Mrs. Denise Pearson, director. All reservations for the event will need to be made prior to March 12th.
Science Fair
The impending snow storm did not dampen the excitement at the Sugar Grove Elementary School's Science: It's Elementary Open House Showcase last Thursday Feb. 25. Each room showcased students sharing with their family, educators, and the community experiments on how they are being taught science through inquiry based education. From Kindergarten through Grade 6 the school was full of future scientists.
RSVP VITA program
The Sugar Grove Free Library is offering free tax preparation for low income, disabled, or seniors. The IRS trained volunteers will file, fill out, and submit your Federal, State, Local, and Rent & Property Rebate forms.

Quilt raffle winner
Bonnie Beyer of Sugar Grove, PA and of Clearwater Florida was the winner of the handmade queen sized quilt that the Sugar Grove Free Library raffled during a recent fund raiser. The quilt was donated by Linda Eckman, the owner of Creative Threads in Frewsburg. The library would like to thank Linda for her generous donation and all who participated by purchasing tickets. The money raised will augment the library's budget. Bonnie was contacted in her home in Florida and stated that she ".can certainly use the quilt since it has been such a cold winter in Florida this year."
Girl Scouts collecting
Sugar Grove Girl Scout Troop #30549 is collecting food items and used clothing items which they can donate to the Sugar Grove Food Pantry and the OutPost Care and Share Store. The troop may be contacting you for a donation to both of these worthy causes. If you have items you would like to donate, you can contact one of the girl scouts in the troop. They are Celina Carlson, Darcy Silvis, Hosanna Senz, Taylor Nulph, Alexis Larson and Cheyenna Borland. Troop leader is Kerri Carlson.
Pork raffle
The EMHS Choir Support Club recently sold raffle tickets for two halves of a pig to be butchered by Coffaro's Custom Butchering in Sugar Grove according to the winners' specifications. Each of the two winners received approximately 95 pounds of pork. Dan and Donna Blair donated the pig to the group's fundraising efforts to help send Senior Choir members to New York City in May 2010. EHS Choir Support Club is happy to announce the winners of its recent Pig Raffle were Megan Church and Brian Dirling.
Soup, dessert, concert
Join the Lander United Methodist Youth Group on Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m. for their Soup and Dessert Supper. You can treat your taste buds from a choice of seven different soups followed by a delicious dessert. The night will continue at 7 p.m. when the Crossmen of Jamestown, N.Y. will sing. The Crossmen perform a variety of songs with emphasis on Southern Gospel. The event will be held at the Lander United Methodist Church and the cost of the dinner and concert is a donation.
Foyer book sale
Stop at the Sugar Grove Free Library and check out the gently used books for sale in the library's foyer display case. Paperbacks are $1 and hardbacks are $2. This is an on-going sale so the selection changes frequently. The money raised will go to augment the library's budget. The foyer also has a selection 2009 tax forms available. If you can't find the forms you need ask for assistance at the circulation desk.
Library
The current economic climate has made public libraries an even more vital part of our communities. Many of the services, materials, and programs offered by the library are free or a very nominal fee is charged to recoup some of the expense to the library.
The Sugar Grove Free Library is dedicated to providing needed services, materials and programming to the communities of Bear Lake and Sugar Grove Boroughs; Farmington, Freehold, and Sugar Grove Townships. Services and Materials currently at the library are:
20,000 Adult Fiction/Nonfiction Books, Wide Selection of Children's and Young Adult Books and Materials, Books on CD/Cassette, Large Print Books, DVD's/ VHS, Interlibrary Loan , 7 Public Computers with a Fiber Optic High Speed Internet Service, Copier and Fax Service, Genealogy Material and On-line Databases, Online Government Programs , Free Tax Preparation (through the RSVP/VITA Program). Programs currently available are Computer Classes, Summer Reading groups for all ages, Story Time for preschool age, Quilting Classes, Accelerated Readers Program running in cooperation with Sugar Grove Elementary School, Genealogy, Digital Camera, and Buying and Selling on EBay Classes, Introduction to Library for all classes of the Elementary School, Job Searching and Resume Support. To continue to provide these services and programs the library needs your support. The Commonwealth of Pa mandates that the library must spend $5 for every person in our service area whether or not they take advantage of the library's services or programs. The library services 5,431 people times $5 is a total of $27,155 that must be spent to qualify to receive $15,123.91 funding from the State. This is a deficit of $12,031.09 at the start of the library's 2010 fiscal year. You can help the local community by monetary donations, book and material donations, support the library's fund raising events, volunteering your time, placing a memorial in the library. Garage sale time
The Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department is looking for those interested in taking part in an indoor garage sale. The date will be sometime the end of March or early April. Right now if you are interested in having a table to sell your garage sale items, please contact Linda at 489-7750 for more information. It's a great way to get a jump start on the garage sale season and best of all you won't have to worry about the weather.
