THE FANTASY ORACLE
Rob Stewart Is...Proceeding with cautionBy ROB STEWART
In the WTO Laid Back League championship, the Lee Roths (Andy Szymczyk), as predicted by the Oracle, survived a late rally from the St. Louis Shockers (Joe Mangione) and captured the title with a 108.28-93.64 win. They were led by their workhorse Chris Johnson's 23.90 points. In the consolation game, Viking Quest (Jon Sitler) claimed third place with a 124.22-102.96 win over Pickelhauben (Dave Hishman).
My Oracles won the championship game in the Manpalace auction league. Tom Brady's and Ryan Grant's combined six touchdowns led my team to a big 136-109 win. Next up for the Oracle is playoff fantasy football and my article ranking the top players will be released in Thursday's Times Observer.
On to Week 17 as some leagues are still playing and this week is the most challenging week of all as several team's starters will be lucky if they even touch the playing surface. Teams that most likely will be resting their starters this week are Indianapolis, San Diego, New England, New Orleans, Green Bay, Arizona and Cincinnati.
My best advice is to proceed with caution.
Look to your waiver wire as there are final week gems just waiting to be picked up. My waiver wire advice had been telling people to pick up Jerome Harrison, Devin Aromashadu and Arian Foster. All three came through big time in the playoffs and helped several teams win championships.
I have been asked who I believe will emerge from the AFC and my prediction is Baltimore and the NY Jets. The Jets are going to be playing a Cincinnati team that is going to be resting their starters and since Braylon Edwards guaranteed a victory - well I have to listen as it's not as if he ever shoots his mouth off without telling it the way it is (sarcasm).
Baltimore gets the luxury of playing an Oakland team that looked horrendous against Cleveland last week and should be able to run them into submission.
CUTLER CORNER: Sunday night was what every Bears fan expected when they traded to get Jay Cutler. He was magnificent against the Vikings (273 yards, four TD passes and just one interception) and his touchdown throw to Devin Aromashodu to end the game was a thing of beauty, hitting him 40 yards in stride. He was also named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. This week the Bears play the Lions and I am expecting another big game from Jay. As a Bears fan, this game gave me hope that next year things will be different as I still believe Cutler is one of the five best quarterbacks in the league, contrary to public opinion.
FREE AGENTS TO TARGET: Matt Moore, Mike Bell, Mike Tolbert, Larry Johnson, Brandon Jackson, Lynell Hamilton, Lex Hilliard, Jabar Gaffney (Brandon Marshall is suspended), Devin Aromashodu, Muhsin Muhammed (now that Steve Smith is on IR he should get more targets), Mark Clayton (Mason may be out), the 49ers defense and Robbie Gould.
INJURIES: Steve Smith (CAR on IR), Vincent Jackson, Lance Moore, Torry Holt (168 games consecutive streak ending), Pierre Garcon, Johnny Knox, Nate Burleson, Bruce Gradkowski, Mercedes Lewis, Brandon Jacobs (IR), Pierre Thomas, DeAngelo Williams, Willie Parker and Joe Nedney all appear out. Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler are also out due to suspensions. Questionable plays this week include Jonathon Stewart, Steven Jackson, Ahmad Bradshaw, Ricky Williams, Michael Turner, Derrick Mason, Donnie Avery, Eddie Royal and Tony Gonzalez.
PLAYERS TO BE VERY WARY OF THIS WEEK: Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Aaron Rodgers, Ryan Grant, LaDanian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles, Joseph Addai, Cedric Benson, Reggie Bush, Reggie Wayne, Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Robert Meachem, Chad Ochocinco, Marques Colston, Antonio Gates, Jermichael Finley, Jeremy Shockey and Dallas Clark.
The Boston Herald reported that Tom Brady was told that he should be prepared to play the whole game against the Houston Texans, which seems illogical to me. If he is going to play more than a half he is a must start, as are Randy Moss and Wes Welker. I somehow would be surprised if that materializes. Bill Belichick even joked with one reporter, who was inquiring on this situation, if he was worried because of his fantasy team. You've got to love that! Laurence Maroney will be in a time share with Sammy Morris regardless of how the game is played.
Another dilemma is what to do with your Arizona Cardinals players. If the Giants upset the Vikings then the Cardinals will go all out against the Green Bay Packers as they still may have a chance at the no. 2 seed and the bye week. If the Giants lose though, expect Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Beanie Wells to be spectators for most if not all the game. One should also realize that there is a strong chance that the Cardinals play these same Packers again next week in the first round of the playoffs, so it is likely they will not want to show very much in a meaningless game.
The Saints starters are all going to start their games, but some reports have them playing one series and then watching from the sidelines. I expect they will play into the second quarter, but their production shouldn't warrant fantasy consideration. I would expect the Packers to approach their game with the Cardinals in much the same manner as the Saints do against the Panthers. Coach Mike McCarthy claimed they would approach this as a normal game and play to win. That comment can be interpreted several ways. I take that to mean we are going to try and win the game, but Matt Flynn, Brandon Jackson and Jordy Nelson will be the ones trying to score on offense.
ULTIMATE LINEUP: Jay Cutler, Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Andre Johnson, Roddy White, Brent Celek, Matt Prater and the Ravens defense. Flex player this week will be Rashard Mendenhall.
FANTASY BUST OF THE WEEK (11-5) : As I predicted Reggie Wayne put up only 33 yards and any owners who played him felt the pain. This week I will stay away from obvious players who will only play a half at most and focus my energy on DeSean Jackson. Last game against Dallas, he had two catches for 29 yards and the Cowboys will double team all day as they try to win the NFC East. Look for him to be held scoreless and under 70 yards.
