WRESTLING: Dragons perfect at own wrestling duals
County match comes down to wireBy ALLEN SEYBERT aseybert@timesobserver.com
The Warren Dragons finished a perfect 5-0 at their annual eight-team wrestling duals Wednesday while the Youngsville Eagles returned home with a respectable 3-2 record.
However, that's probably not what many of those spectators who stuck around all day will remember.
Rather, they will likely remember the thrilling county clash that finished off the day as the Dragons clipped the Eagles 37-33 in arguably one of the best matches in recent county history.
"Those that stayed around until the end definitely got their money's worth," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. "Our goal coming into the day was to finish 5-0 and we knew it wasn't going to be easy. But the guys stepped up in key spots and gave us enough to finish out the day undefeated."
Despite the tight setback, Youngsville coach Philip Knapp was very pleased with the way his team battled and added to the momentum they've built this season.
"I can't be disappointed because the guys wrestled as hard as they could and fought all day," said Knapp. "That last match was just incredible. Both teams were in their fifth match of the day and not as fresh as they could be, but they delivered in a big way. It was a match that certainly could've gone either way."
The county match ended a grueling day of wrestling that got underway at 8:30 a.m.
Warren got on the board first with a forfeit victory for Kyle Shorts at 112 pounds, but Youngsville's Brandon Eckert closed the gap to 6-5 at 119 points with a technical fall victory over Stephen Kibbey. The Eagles grabbed their first lead at 125 pounds when freshman Hunter Proctor logged a second period pin of Tyler Haight.
The Eagles' run of victories was stopped at two when Drew Williams made short work of Michael Darling and Warren's lead was pushed to 16-11 after the 135-pound match in which Amani Bosko major decisioned Kevin Seeley in a hard-fought 18-10 bout.
Youngsville snatched the lead back at 140 pounds with Bobby Rouche's pin of Adam Barirde and things heated up with a marquee matchup between Warren's Curtis DeLattre and Youngsville's Nick Lucas.
DeLattre overcame several stoppages for blood and stood in a 5-5 tie with Lucas after two periods.
DeLattre endured and scored a takedown in the final minute to claim a 7-5 decision and give Warren a 19-17 advantage in the fourth lead change of the match.
Brad Lucas avenged his younger brother's loss with a pin of Grant Brown at 152 pounds and the Eagles appeared in control after Robbie Bero's major decision of Drew Johnson gave Youngsville its largest lead of the night at 27-19.
However, Warren was not done and Michael Jaskolka's impressive first period pin of Sam Lucas at 171 pounds kept the Dragons within striking distance at 33-25 despite a Youngsville pin from Griffin Jackson at 189 pounds.
With Warren down eight and having six points coming from a forfeit at 103 pounds to close the match, the Dragons needed to get within five points by the end of the heavyweight match to claim the win. Logan Morley did his part at 215 pounds despite trailing Youngsville's Ricky Patz late in the third period. Down 6-3, Morley scored on a takedown to cut the lead to one and pulled away for good with three third period back points.
Morley's victory put Warren down 33-28 heading into the final match meaning heavyweight Robert Brown needed at least a decision victory over Youngsville's Aaron Niemeyer to put Warren in position for the win. Essentially the Brown vs. Niemeyer match would decide things and it didn't disappoint.
Brown and Niemeyer battled to a 4-4 tie after two periods and Niemeyer's takedown gave him a 6-4 lead in the closing seconds.
However, as time was winding down, Brown scored a reversal sending the match into overtime knotted at 6-6. In overtime, Brown sealed the deal taking Niemeyer to the mat and holding him there for three back points and the 11-6 victory as the Warren faithful erupted in applause.
Even after all that, Youngsville still held a 33-31 lead.
But Michael Himes' forfeit win for Warren at 103 pounds pushed Warren ahead, 37-33.
The rest of the day's action wasn't nearly as thrilling with several forfeits causing wide margins of victory in several matches. Warren's 5-0 day also included victories over Kane (66-7), Seneca (53-24), Cameron County (64-18) and Bradford (43-34).
Youngsville's only other loss on the day was to Bradford (45-33) with wins coming over Slippery Rock (56-10), Titusville (46-25) and Kane (51-11).
Several county wrestlers had perfect 5-0 days, including Warren's DeLattre and Bosko and Youngsville's Jackson, Rouche and Eckert. Grant Brown, Colter Johnson and Adam Barirde were all 4-1 for Warren with Nick Lucas, Brad Lucas and Niemeyer accomplishing the same feat for the Eagles.
Warren is off until January 15 when it travels to the Corry Duals while Youngsville hosts Seneca on Wednesday.
