WRESTLING: Knights, Eagles take down region wins
By ALLEN SEYBERT and JON SITLER aseybert@timesobserver.comUNION CITY - This is the type of match that Youngsville coach Philip Knapp has been waiting for.
The Eagles got several late period pins and won a couple of close decisions en route to their second straight win to start the season, 45-21, Thursday at Union City High School.
"I told the guys that this is probably the best match we've wrestled in my three years at this school," said Knapp. "From top to bottom, the guys showed a lot of heart and went out there and did what they had to do to bring home the win."
The Eagles were benefitted by several late match or late period maneuvers that allowed them to turn wins into extra points, i.e. turning a major decision into a technical fall or a decision into a pin.
That trend started at 125 pounds as Hunter Proctor was able to pin Union City's Jesse Middleton with just eight seconds remaining in the bout. Moments later, the Bears received a forfeit and the match was tied 6-6 after two weight classes.
The Eagles responded by reeling off wins in every weight class from 135 to 189 pounds, including three pins and a tech fall. Kevin Seeley started the run with a 19-4 tech fall win at 135 pounds and Bobby Rouche and Nick Lucas followed with wins at 140 and 145. Rouche was a narrow 7-6 decision winner while Lucas won via major decision, 12-4.
Josh Lewis decisioned the Bears' Lewis Pisani, 7-2, at 152 pounds before Robbie Bero (160), Sam Lucas (171) and Griffin Jackson (189) clicked off three consecutive pins. Bero's pin came with one second remaining in the first period and Lucas' fall came with three seconds left in the second. Jackson needed all of 52 seconds to add another six points to the Youngsville team score.
Union City would win three of the final four matches of the night, but Youngsville had already done enough to come out on top.
"The middle of our lineup stepped up huge tonight," added Knapp. "They really carried us and helped give us the momentum needed for the win."
Christian Bundy, Riley Sheldon, Alex Dunn, Sage Sivak and Stephen Beattie all picked up junior varsity wins for the Eagles.
Youngsville returns to action Saturday, competing in the Commodore Perry Duals on Saturday.

Eisenhower 36, Seneca 27
ERIE - Eisenhower bounced back from a Region 2 loss to Fort LeBoeuf with a 36-27 win at Seneca Thursday.
Ike coach Kris Black said the Knights won the matches they needed to win.
The last match of night had Dylan Baker earn a pin in 45 seconds at 119 pounds to, ultimately, lift Eisenhower (1-1) to the win.
"We had six on the board (with a forfeit next at 125), but that was a big match," said Black. "The match was probably won at 145 and 152. Both of those were big swing-matches. On paper they could have gone either way, but both Dillon (Farrell) and Logan (Head) came out with big pins there."
Trailing 9-6, Farrell was leading 6-1 when he got the pin with 16 seconds left in the third period of his 145-pound match. Head was up 7-0 before a second-period pin at 152, and an 18-9 Eisenhower lead.
After three straight Seneca wins, Dan Monticue regained the lead for Ike again with a pin in 31 seconds at heavyweight.
Baker's pin sealed the deal.
Black said Kenny Peters looked good in a 4-0 loss at 189 to one of Seneca's better wrestlers, Ryan Murphy. He added it was nice to see everyone on the bench into every match.
